One of the most exciting new SUVs to be introduced in recent years, the new Genesis GV80 represents a new way of looking at luxury. The first SUV from the Genesis brand builds on the success of the line and showcases a new form of luxury travel. Napleton News had an opportunity to view it at its North American reveal in Miami Beach.
The new Genesis GV80 is a mid-to-large-sized SUV that normally seats five-passengers. If equipped, it can accommodate up to seven passengers in three rows. “The GV80 represents the essence of the innovative spirit of Genesis,” said William Lee, Executive Vice President and Global Head of the Genesis brand. The Genesis GV80 concept vehicle originally debuted at the 2017 New York International Auto Show.
The Genesis GV80 is regularly configured as a rear-wheel-drive platform. Power comes in two forms, the first being a 2.5-liter direct-injected, intercooled and turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 300 horsepower and 311 lb-ft of torque. A larger, more powerful choice exists with the 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6. This twice-as-nice V6 pumps out 375 horsepower and 391 lb-ft of torque and is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission with overdrive. It is available as an all-wheel-drive SUV as well. The suspension will be an electronically controlled suspension with road preview, making it nearly a go-anywhere vehicle able to handle almost every surface and road condition.
Looking every bit like a challenger to Japanese and European luxury brands, the new Genesis GV80 takes the best of those worlds and adds a bit of American design courtesy of Genesis Design in California. Together with their colleagues in South Korea and Germany, the brand, using their “Athletic Elegance” design language, pushed the envelope already seen in the G70, G80 and G90 model vehicles.
For this 2021 Genesis GV80, the design teams included the new Genesis “Crest Grille,” which headlines the new face of the brand. With LED lighting everywhere, it’s a distinctive look that stands out from its competition. The Quad Lamp graphic will become the most recognizable, unique signature of Genesis design, as the simplest of lines communicate a distinct identity,” said Luc Donckerwolke, Executive Vice President, Chief Design Officer of Hyundai Motor Group.
The interior features the “Beauty of White Space.” The distinctive Korean design touch is a hallmark of beauty and elegance. The wide interior of the GV80 is set-off by thin air vents running across the passenger compartment. A new 14.5-inch split-screen infotainment display screen holds sway in the center of the cockpit. Further back on the console is a knurled gear selector knob and a handwriting recognition circular tablet that allows the driver to set a destination without operating a keyboard on the navigation screen. Surrounding it is a forest’s worth of elegant wood veneer.
Inside the new Genesis GV80, a driver and passengers can experience Road Active Noise Cancellation (RANC) technology to reduce road noise while driving. The first time such a system is used in a Genesis vehicle, it generates out-of-phase sound waves that analyze road noise in real-time, dramatically reducing irregular, simultaneous road noise.
From a safety standpoint, the new Genesis GV80 leaves nothing out.
