New-Generation Jeep Wrangler Significantly Reduces Environmental Impact

The newest generation Jeep Wrangler recently completed its Global Warming Potential (GWP) analysis, and the study finds that the brand’s most popular model has reduced its overall GWP by 15 percent.

Even though one might predict that SUVs like the Jeep Wrangler are still harmful, the study shows that the model has the potential to account for a 14-metric-ton reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions over the course of a year.

“This is the outcome we expect when we launch a new vehicle,” says Mitch Clauw, FCA Vice President and Head of Global Pre-Programs and Program Management. “In all our processes, the mitigation of environmental impact is a baked-in consideration.”

A key contributor that led to the positive results from the GWP analysis is how the newly re-designed Jeep Wrangler is being produced. The model is now equipped with a 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4 engine, which helps reduce GHG while still providing optimal performance to the driver.

The newest Jeep Wrangler is also equipped with an eight-speed automatic transmission that pairs with both the 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4 and 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engines. In the I-4 configuration, the transmission helps the 2020 Wrangler Unlimited achieve a 21 miles-per-gallon (mpg) rating, according to a press release from Fiat Chrysler Automobiles.

It’s clear that FCA is making a conscious effort to reduce carbon emissions across their entire lineup of vehicles. In fact, the 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4 engine is also available in the Jeep Cherokee midsize SUV.

Additionally, the auto manufacturer is committing $400 million to produce the engine at a former transmission plant in Kokomo, Indiana, a project that will bring FCA’s total employment in the state to 8,300.

The Ed Napleton Automotive Group has multiple Jeep dealerships in four different states. Each location also sells new and used Chrysler, Dodge, and RAM models in addition to the Jeep brand.
