FCA RECALLING RAM 2500 AND RAM 3500 PICKUPS

Fiat Chrysler Automobile’s RAM truck division has issued a recall for nearly 85,000 model year 2019 and 2020 RAM 2500 and RAM 3500 Heavy Duty pickup trucks for an issue that can cause a fire under the hood. The problem can cause a transmission leak, which can lead to an increased fire risk, the company announced in early February.

In question are 2019 and 2020 RAM 2500 and RAM 3500 trucks that use a six-speed automatic transmission as found on Turbodiesel-equipped RAM trucks. Apparently, the issue is caused by a build-up of too much pressure and heat inside the transmission, causing it to expel fluid from the dipstick tube. When it leaks onto high-temperature parts, it potentially can start a fire, said an FCA notification sent to dealership service departments.

FCA and RAM said they have been made aware of one injury related to the faulty system. Additionally, they plan to fix all unsold and affected RAM trucks on dealer lots before they are sold.

Paperwork filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said that RAM Heavy Duty truck owners may notice an odd smell or noises from the transmission, along with lurches in the pickup truck prior to a fire.

The fix involves replacing the transmission valve body separator plate and to reprogram the powertrain control module for free.

WHAT OWNERS SHOULD DO:

RAM and parent company Fiat Chrysler Automobiles will begin a notification process informing them of the recall on March 14, 2020. Owners can call FCA at 1(800) 853-1403 or NHTSA at 1(888) 327-4236 or the NHTSA website to check their vehicle identification number to learn more.
