Chrysler Airflow Concept Revealed

Chrysler revealed the brand’s new direction via the Chrysler Airflow Concept at the Consumer Electronics Show 2022 in Las Vegas. Held in early January, the CES highlights the latest in consumer electronics in the fields of televisions, appliances, photography, audio, video and more.

1934 Chrysler Airflow

Knowledgeable readers will know that the Chrysler Airflow is not a new nameplate. At Napleton News, we always thought the original Airflow was a looker. Initially used in 1934, it reappeared at the 2022 CES as a teaser to the brand’s focus in the coming years. The Chrysler Airflow Concept signifies the brand’s commitment to launch its first battery-electric vehicle by 2025. Under its Stellantis parentage, Chrysler plans to implement a full battery-electric product lineup by 2028.

We think the 2022 Airflow Concept is a stunner, too.

What’s the motivation behind the Chrysler Airflow Concept?

There are two types of motivation involved with the Chrysler Airflow Concept. Stellantis claims the purpose of the Airflow Concept is to be the basis for a transformative, sustainable mobility technology that will make the world safer, cleaner and more connected. From a propulsion standpoint, the Airflow utilizes a leading-edge electric drive system with intuitive artificial intelligence. It’s connected to the vehicle and helps it deliver between 350-to-400 miles of fast-charging mileage.

The new Chrysler Airflow Concept incorporates the brand’s new STLA Brain Platform and STLA SmartCockpit protocols to deliver seamless connectivity for a new driver and passenger experience. The interior presents a connected hub for consumers’ digital lifestyles. We know it all sounds like new-age gibberish, but we get where Chrysler is going with this!

The Chrysler Airflow Concept features a dynamic design proportion, with a low ride height and streamlined, two-tone roof line that achieves an elegant yet athletic profile.

The Airflow unifies all the technologies in the cabin and seamlessly connects its passengers to their digital lives. Using the Airflow user experience, passengers use high-powered graphics and well-planned details for a clean upscale appearance that is safe, easy and simple to understand. Menu-based screens are user-configurable and can be sharable with all passengers, should the need arise.

Autonomous driving

Functional and ambient lighting helps the driver and passengers create a personalized inner sanctum, augmented by the Chrysler Airflow Concept’s panoramic roof that allows daylight to stream into the cabin.

The Chrysler Airflow uses STLA AutoDrive to deliver Level 3 Autonomous Driving capabilities. It is constantly upgradeable via “Over The Air” updates from the Stellantis “cloud.”

The power from two 150 kW electric-drive motors (EDM) helps to move this concept. One drives the front and the other controls the rear axle. More powerful EDMs can be used in the future as a result of this design. Think of the possibilities of an electric HEMI or other Chrysler high-performance electric vehicles soon. The motor generators are located far forward and rearward to allow extra space inside the vehicle. This practice allows for extra interior space and larger tire sizes. My, what big tires you have!

The Chrysler Airflow is simply a test. It’s an exercise that pushed Stelantis engineers and designers to their limits in pursuit of a platform that can successfully carry this legacy brand into the future.

I've loved everything on wheels: Trains, Planes and definitely Automobiles. I am constantly in search of the latest in new technology, which makes our lives better each day, but will always respect the classics. You can't continue forward without first taking a look back at where you've been.
