HONDA AND ACURA RECALL FOR AIRBAG INFLATORS

American Honda is in the process of a 2.4-million Honda and Acura recall of their automobiles from the 1996-2003 model years. Sold in the United States, the list of affected vehicles include Acura CL, MDX, RL and TL models, and Honda Accord, Civic, CRV, Odyssey and EV Plus cars, minivans and SUVs.

Owners will receive a request to come into a dealership so technicians can inspect and, if needed, replace, at no charge, certain Takata driver front airbag inflators that were manufactured with non-azide propellant. Free Recall inspections and repairs will begin in approximately one year because replacement parts from alternative Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) are not yet available.

In November 2019, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) was informed by Takata that some of these inflators might lack specific seals that allowed air and moisture, which in turn contributes to propellant degradation. If one of the recalled inflators during a crash, it might be too slow or conversely, too forceful, rupturing and throwing metal debris toward occupants.

To date, Honda knows of one field rupture with the type of inflator that has been flagged by Takata. The 1997 Honda Civic was involved in a Texas crash in 2012. They are also aware of two other NADI inflator ruptures as vehicles were being scrapped in Japan.

Initial mailed notifications will be sent to owners of recalled Honda and Acura vehicles beginning in mid-March 2020. A second notice is planned once replacement parts are ready for distribution and installation. Owners may check the recall status of their Honda vehicles by going to www.recalls.honda.com, or their Acura vehicles at www.recalls.acura.com or by calling (888) 234-2138.
