Carnival on windy road

A Kia Carnival Hybrid minivan that looks like an SUV and takes advantage of a Hybrid powertrain, too? Yes, please! We at Napleton News are all on board for such a creature. Whether it’s road trips, big box store runs or cruising to and from an event, the Carnival could be up to the task. What do we really think? Read on to find out.

What’s the Carnival all about?

Frugality and practicality are two of the key points of the Carnival Hybrid. Think of it: An eight passenger minivan that achieves 33 mpg, all week long. Add in tons of cargo space, SUV looks and the industry’s best warranty to round out the bill. It’s a pretty compelling offering that is already an award-winning bestseller.

Under the hood of the Carnival Hybrid is a 242 horsepower turbocharged hybrid four-cylinder engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. There is 271 lb-ft of torque on tap, too. Power is delivered to the front wheels. The Carnival hybrid can tow up to 2,500 pounds while the V6 powered model can tote 3,500. Turns out the hybrid is not as powerful as the non-hybrid V6 but that’s ok. It’s plenty fast enough!

Looks count with the new Kia Carnival.

The Carnival underwent a refresh in 2025 that gave it a more SUV-like appearance, so there is not much new in this latest 2026 edition. But what is here is pretty damn good. That includes a long-ish snout that gives it a more truck-like, less family-mobile appearance.

There are sliding doors on both sides that deploy with a double pull of the handle. Wait a few seconds for the door to move and before you know it, this Carnival is your oyster! Once you access the interior, you’ll notice the ride height is not as challenging as the one you might find in, say, an Escalade or Suburban. In other words, the Kia Carnival is more down to earth.

How about that interior?

With room enough for eight people, the Carnival can almost carry a full baseball team. (For those who don’t follow Baseball, each team has nine per side.) Our SX Prestige model came with second row VIP lounge seating, complete with leg lifts, reclining cushions and more. They even slide back and forth to allow easy access to the third row.

The display screen is actually a pair of 12.3-inch screens that create a high-tech look that covers the driver’s instrument gauges and infotainment/cellular/climate controls. The result is a wrap-around effect that is easy to operate.

The rearview mirror is one of those new-fangled affairs that via flip of the bottom switch converts from a standard mirror to a digital screen instantly. Beware, though, as it does require a refocusing of your field of view.

Cargo space is plentiful inside the Kia Carnival. By the numbers, there is 40.2 cubic feet of space behind the third row. If you need more, fold the second and third rows forward and you’ll see 145.1 cubic feet of space behind the first row. This Carnival leads the segment with more cargo space than any other midsize van.

The Carnival is no speed demon but that’s not the point. Here, high mileage is king but still, the 1.6-liter turbo four is no slouch. Acceleration is still surprisingly good considering the weight of the batteries and a full load of passengers.

2026 Carnival Hybrid

The Carnival Hybrid is a sprite, as well as spritely on the hoof. That’s just our way of saying it can manage to hold its own when entering the highway or hitting the on-ramp. Passing is a breeze, thanks to the boost from the electric motor. Steering can be a bit skittish on a quick start but once the Carny settles, it calms down again.

The best part is it is quiet and comfortable and perfect for a long-haul road trip. And with the hybrid powertrain, there will be quite a few gas stations you’ll pass-but not stop at-along the way! Saddle up and get on out there, we say!
