Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe

It offers similar looks to the new Grand Wagoneer, but the new Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe offers a new vibe for the Jeep faithful. Oh, did we tell you it’s a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, too? We must have forgotten about that. Napleton News had a go with the new 4xe and we came away pretty charged up. Read along to see our report.

Tell us all about the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe

Fully capable, the new Grand Cherokee 4xe is one of the fifth-generation models offered by the brand that put Toledo on the map. Well, to be honest, it’s not built in Toledo, Ohio, anymore, but there’s some buckeye pride in every model. It also has a hybrid electric power generator that works in conjunction with an internal combustion gasoline engine. Stout fuel economy numbers are the result.

Power for the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe comes from a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 engine and two electric motors. This combo makes 375 horsepower at 5,250 rpm and 470 lb-ft of torque at 3,000 rpm. The engine and motor combo is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission with 4-wheel drive.

This powertrain can move the Grand Cherokee 4xe up to 26 miles on electricity alone with a full charge. There are other drive modes that can save electric power depending on which drive mode you choose. These include Hybrid mode, Electric Mode and eSave modes.

It provides PHEV technology that works to enhance the freedom and adventure that Jeep is known for, with unprecedented performance, fuel economy and eco-friendliness.

How does the Grand Cherokee 4xe look?

Remember how strange the Toyota Prius looked when you first set eyes on it? Well, seeing as how you are a Jeep fanatic, it’s clear you’re not having any of that. The Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe looks like nearly every other 2022 Grand Cherokee on the road today. Sure, it has 4xe badging and a charging port on the driver’s side front fender. Aside from blue accents and blue tow hooks, this appears as a standard issue Grand Cherokee SUV.

We especially like the sloped front grille that first appeared on the new Grand Wagoneer model.

What about inside the 4xe?

The Grand Cherokee offers the Luxe Life for its lucky passengers. Leather is everywhere, including the seats, door panels, steering wheel and more. A precision-knurled gear selector dial adds a touch of class and elegance to the center console.

The heated and ventilated front seats are just what the doctor ordered for a hot South Florida summer. Massage functions are here, too, rubbing the kinks out after a hard day hunched over a workbench or a day at the office.

The 4xe includes the famous Uconnect 5 NAV system with a 10.1-inch touchscreen display. But that’s not all. A 19-speaker McIntosh high-performance audio system and 950 watt amplifier fill the cabin with various tones. Whether they come from Snoop or Bocelli is entirely your call.

Behind the wheel of the Grand Cherokee 4xe

The Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe will raise no hackles with previous Jeep owners. It looks just like the regular 2022 model. But you will notice your visits to the corner gas station have become less frequent than before. That’s because of the Hybrid powertrain on board. Fully charged, expect approximately 26 miles of DC power.

Once that battery drains, the 4xe operates like a standard hybrid vehicle. Here, the internal combustion engine reverts to battery recharger, replenishing the 17 kWh EV battery to keep them optimally charged. This is how the motor generator continues to move the vehicle.

As an off-roader, the 4xe displays all the chops of its gas-powered sibling. It’s just quieter when doing so. The climbing ability is top shelf. All EV parts, including batteries, torque converters and other components are protected by underbody skid plates. Sealed and waterproofed, the Trail Rated Jeep Cherokee 4xe components are certified for water fording in streams up to two feet deep.

Drivers can take advantage of three E Selec modes:

• Hybrid: Blends torque from the electric motor and gas engine. The engine and battery are optimized for the best combo of fuel efficiency and performance.
• Electric: Operates on electric power only, until battery reaches minimum charge or full throttle is needed, engaging the gasoline engine.
• eSave: Utilizes the gasoline engine, saving the batteries for later use. Battery Save and Battery Charge are two options available within this mode.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe turns out to be a very impressive vehicle that can take a family cross country, across town or even off-road in absolute comfort.
