Giulia AWD

A sexy Italian, the Alfa Romeo Giulia Veloce AWD is one of the most exciting Mediterranean imports to hit the shores in quite a while. There’s a reason, too. It’s loaded with more style than a deep-dish Chicago Pizza. We like things from the boot. Whether it’s the food, the fashion or the cars, Napleton News is all over everything Italian! Read on to find out more!

What moves the Alfa Romeo Giulia?

The Alfa Romeo Giulia Veloce AWD gets its motivation from a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-banger. At peak roar, it delivers 280 horsepower and 306 lb-ft of torque. Power transfers to the all-wheel drive powertrain via an eight-speed automatic transmission. If AWD is not your style, you can opt for the standard rear-wheel drive setup instead.

Since ours is the Veloce, it brings more to the table. This includes a limited-slip differential, red Brembo brakes, sport front seats, 19-inch aluminum-alloy wheels and black window trim.

The engine has a throaty roar that brings dulcet tones that will affect the lower parts of many gastrointestinal tracts. That’s okay, because it’s a feeling we never tire from.

How does the Alfa Romeo Giulia look?

We begin by describing the Giulia as fluid, slippery and even languid. Languid you may ask? Yes, languid in the sense that it has a relaxed look and feel that wants to take its time. It’s the Italian way, after all!

We begin with gran turismo styling, which features a long hood and short rear deck that are truly business-like in execution. The better to cover up the engine with, obviously. The only thing that gives away the Alfa’s intentions are the huge gaping maw of cooling intakes below the bumper.

Along the flanks are side strakes that add an aggressive look and maybe even a little bit of aerodynamic streamlining in the process.

What about Giulia’s Insides?

There’s good and bad going on here. The good: The seats are comfortable and suited for the long haul that the car is suited for. That is, if you are lucky enough to sit in the two front thrones. The back seats are good in their own right, but only if you have short, skinny legs. That’s because, as is typical of the segment, rear seat legroom is at a premium. This is partly because of the short wheelbase, which has been optimized for stellar handling rather than limousine-like comfort.

The driver enjoys a 12.3-inch digital driver information display. The centerstack touchscreen display is a rather disappointing 8.8-inch screen, which is sadly above par when comparing it with the other vehicles in the segment. Still, it manages to toss in several goodies like a wireless charger along with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, for good measure.

Power comes on quickly with the Alfa’s turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. So fast, in fact, that the Giulia goes from 0 to 60 mph in 5.1 seconds. That’s quite stout for a four-door midsize sedan. When you stomp on the skinny pedal, you will enjoy the sound that comes from under the hood. It’s a throaty growl that is worth the price of admission.

Testing the giulia

Handling is top shelf thanks to Alfa’s standard sport suspension. There’s a certain stickiness, thanks to the Pirelli all-season tires. Brembo braking is sure and steady and clearly there when you need them.

Overall, the Alfa Romeo Giulia Veloce is a vehicle that aspires to greatness, but doesn’t quite hit the mark. It is a suitable, lower cost replacement for some of the German sport sedans on the market today. But it may not be suitable to everyone. For those wanting more, they should pursue the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio. That one goes to eleven.
