Aston Martin DBX707 – Shaken not stirred

When is a supercar not a supercar? When it’s an SUV like the Aston Martin DBX707. Whatchou’ talkin’ ‘bout, Willis? We at Napleton News are talking about an SUV that can do Costco runs on Saturday. Church on Sunday. And high-speed runs on any other day ending in “y.” Just like us, we like fast cars. That’s why we were eager to hop inside a DBX707 for a week. Here’s our report!

Cleared for takeoff: The Aston Martin DBX707

What’s under the hood of the Aston Martin DBX707?

First of all, there’s no longer a plain-Jane vanilla DBX model. The DBX707 is the only model available. As such, it’s powered by a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine sourced from Mercedes AMG. Power checks in at 697 horsepower and 663 lb-ft of torque. There’s an AMG 9-speed automatic transmission to bang through the gears and there is full-time all-wheel drive, too. The DBX707 basically consists of a rear-drive powertrain that sends power, via a center differential, to the front axle when it detects slippage.

The 4.0-liter twin turbo V8 supplies 697 horsepower to the DBX.

The ride can vary because of Aston Martin’s Triple Chamber Air Suspension with adaptive dampers. These air bags vary the ride height and the suspension firmness. The DBX’s ride is completely variable, depending on your driving style and the vehicle’s stabilization needs. The one thing we did notice, though, was the way the carbon ceramic brakes seemed to take their time before finally biting to a halt. You slowly become used to it and know how much pressure to apply but the reality is it is a bit unnerving at first.

Looks matter with the DBX707

The side view of the DBX707.

The grille is unmistakably Aston Martin. Fresh from the mind of David Brown, the look is smart. It’s distinguished by openings that flank the grille with twin lamela running through them. Sculpted front wings add interest to the side flanks. They are joined by more than $30,000 in carbon fiber upper and lower accessories line the exterior. The carbon exterior also makes up the front splitter, the side skirts and the rear diffuser. A ducktail-style spoiler curls up on the rear decklid. Our tester is sprayed in Q-Special paint, which is a light and highly reflective greenish yellow that is other-worldly to say the least! Oh, did we mention the value added cost of the paint? How about $13,600?

In the cockpit of the 707

The interior of the DBX707

If you have enjoyed quality time inside an Aston Martin and enjoyed it, you’ll enjoy the DBX707, too. The interior is anchored by a pair of touchscreens. There’s a 12.3 incher for the gauges, and a 10.3-inch screen for audio, cellular, climate, navigation and vehicular controls. A stubby gear selector sits in the center console surrounded by buttons to adjust the ride quality, exhaust sounds, seat heating and ventilation and more. The climate controls take a few minutes to get acquainted with, especially with barrel-style controls for temperature, fan speed and audio volume.

The rear seats offer comfortable seating for three but are better suited to a pair. Finally, the cargo area has space enough to carry three Rodney Dangerfield-sized golf bags, 20 bags of mulch, groceries and more.

Ready for takeoff in the DBX707.

The Aston Martin DBX707 is the SUV that thinks it’s a supercar. It’s one of the most powerful on the road today and the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 is one of our favorite engines of all time. Although it’s an SUV, the DBX is still a fully capable performer, delivering a torrent of power on demand, anytime you squeeze the skinny pedal. Paddle shift levers let you bang through the nine-speed gearbox, just as though you were A-M F1 ace Fernando Alonzo. How does 0-60 in 3.1 seconds sound?

If the ride is not rigid enough, just hit the shock absorber control button on the center console to firm it up a bit for increased handling prowess. It may rattle grandma’s fillings but you’ll thank us later, we promise!
