Silverado EV

The Chevrolet Silverado EV Trail Boss is as tough as ever in almost every category. So why isn’t it doing better at the dealerships? Here at Napleton News, we endeavor to find out.

What’s the big deal about the Silverado EV Trail Boss?

Well, it is big, after all. It’s also powerful and features the very popular Trail Boss trim package. In fact, it’s every bit as strong as a traditional gasoline engine-powered truck. The Silverado EV is one stout truck. Already available on the standard Silverado and Colorado vehicles as part of specific packages, the Trail Boss is raised by two inches over the standard Silverado EV for additional ground clearance.

Power for the Silverado EV comes from two electric motors, with one on each axle. They feature performance torque vectoring and electronic 4WD for traction in nearly every condition. Power checks in at 510 horsepower and 490 lb-ft of torque for the base WT version. Our Trail Boss Max Range version pumps up the volume to 725 horsepower and 775 lb.-ft of torque, with a GM-estimated range of 478 miles.

The suspension is a four-wheel independent setup with column-mounted electric power steering. Four-wheel disc brakes bring regenerative braking to help send some of that power back to the battery. The ride height and modified front end come with a 31.6 degree approach angle, a 25.1 degree departure angle and a breakover point of 19.2 degrees.

Looks Count for Everything with the Silverado EV.

Think back in your memory of the Chevrolet Avalanche. It had what was known as a midgate that was like a wall that opened so you could carry a longer length payload. If needed, you would open the “gate” leading to the almost 6-foot long bed. From there you had access to an additional five feet enabling the transport of items up to 11 feet long. There’s the bonus!

In front, there’s a “frunk” to carry a couple suitcases or other items including the EV’s charging cable. There’s a 120-volt household-style outlet and LED lighting everywhere. There’s also a fixed full-glass roof panel to let the sunshine in.

The Silverado EV starts as a crew cab carrying five passengers. Trims may vary but the format remains the same. With our Trail Boss, it was loaded with the best of everything. That includes leather seats, a 17.7-inch advanced display screen with Google Built-in, an 11-inch driver gauge display. And regardless of what anyone else tells you, Google Built-in is a poor replacement for Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.

One of the cooler features inside was the keyless entry with auto start and stop. Open the door and sit in the seat. The engine starts by either closing the door or pushing the brake pedal. When you arrive, just put the car in park or open your door to shut it off.

This is one of the quietest trucks you will ever find your way in. We know it is for us! But it is a truck, nonetheless. A big, heavy truck. With lots of grunt and horsepower. We’re talking  725 horsepower and 775 lb-ft of torque. As mentioned before, there is an estimated range of 476 miles, give or take how heavy your right foot may be.

Let’s talk about that right foot.

One feature available to drivers is the regenerative brake setting. The object of this function allows you to drive using your right foot as you would normally do. When you need to slow or come to a complete stop, you simply lift your foot off the pedal. There is no braking necessary! How abruptly the system works depends on how you have selected the braking pressure. In the “high” mode, it’s the most aggressive, displaying heavy brake pressure. The benefit of this is that it regenerates power to the car’s battery.

With this extended range battery pack, you can safely tow up to 12,500 lbs., along with 2,100 lbs. of payload in the bed.

As reported in other sources, the Chevy Silverado EV Trail Boss uses an 800-volt DC fast charge architecture. With this system, drivers can add 100 miles of range in around 10 minutes, if the local supercharger is up and running correctly.

Charging infrastructure aside, the new Chevrolet Silverado EV Trail Boss, with its 476 miles of estimated range, makes the case for a viable electric vehicle. While others suffered with less than adequate mileage, the Silverado EV is proud to strut with its best in class range.
