Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat Hammerhead

The Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat Hammerhead is one of the last of the Mohicans, at least for the Stellantis stalwart. We say the last because this supercharged V8-powered monster continues on after all the other muscle machines from Dodge have been replaced with straight-six twin turbo mills or even (gasp) electric motors. Here, at Napleton News, as long as it moves us figuratively and emotionally, we are cool with it.

As it is, there are 11 versions of Durango models available. That’s too many if you ask us, but you didn’t. With engines ranging from the venerable Pentastar V6 to the supercharged 6.2-liter Hemi V8, there is clearly something for everyone!

This could be one of the “Last Call” models signifying the end of the HEMI engines. But be aware that Dodge has backed out of those deals in the past, revitalizing the engine that was supposed to be put to pasture. The phrase, “you snooze, you lose,” applies here, so we suggest staying on top of it.

But back to the Hellcat Hammerhead!

If you’re a fan of the Chicago PD TV show, you’ll recognize the Durango SRT as Sgt. Hank Voight’s vehicle of choice. He drifts it through the streets of the Windy City, looking for bad guys on the loose. Only this one is better! It features the Supercharged and intercooled 6.2-liter HEMI V8 pumping out 710 horsepower and 645 lb-ft of torque.

The 6.4-liter HEMI has been discontinued for this vehicle.

That power has to go somewhere and in this case, it’s to both front and rear axles. Using an 8-speed automatic transmission, it can make a zero to 60 mph sprint in under four seconds. Bringing things back under control are the job of the Brembo brakes. Other trick features include four-wheel traction control, an electronic limited slip differential and adaptive damping suspension.

How does the Durango SRT Hellcat Look?

Let’s be honest: The Dodge Durango body is one that incorporates the so-called “two-box” design. That means a small box where the engine is located, joined by the larger box where the passengers sit. Two boxes. Get it?

The new Durango Hammerhead is outfitted in its special “Night Moves” dark blue metallic paint. The matte black hood includes a stinger-style hood scoop to help the mighty HEMI engine breathe.

Truthfully, though, if you liked the 2011 version, you’ll enjoy this one too. That’s because not much has changed since then. Sure, there have been updates throughout but the Durango has never wavered from the aggressive stance that pushes it past its competition. And that’s a good thing.

What about inside this Hellcat?

Although looking a bit dated, the Durango has managed to keep pace with some others in the segment. Features like Uconnect 5 and excellent leather performance seats keep it current. So too, the 19-speaker Harman Kardon premium audio system.

The middle row includes a pair of Captain’s chairs that are fully functional and provide access to the third row in the way back. Although geared to smaller passengers, adults will fit, in a pinch and for a short ride.

Behind the wheel of the Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat Hammerhead

Simply put, the Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat is a beast from another era. The days of turning it on, letting it idle for a few moments and then being off with yourself are still here. It just seems that in this day and age, there are much more refined practitioners of the craft than in the past.

The first thing you notice is the intense rumble from the big V8. Announcing its presence with authority, it can annoy after some hardcore pedal pushing. Those expecting the engine to calm down after warmup will be a bit disappointed. The sound lingers longer. The one thing that may be missing on the Hellcat (by design) is extra insulation to keep the noise out.

Acceleration is a different story, though. This beast skedaddles with the best of them. With a dropkick to the chest, the Durango rears up and gets lost in no time. The Brembo brakes bring things back under control following some spirited driving.

The only thing missing is a fuel tank in your back yard. This baby drinks like a drunken sailor.
