2025 Ford Mustang Mach-E SUV

When is a Mustang, er, not really a Mustang? Answer: When it is a Ford Mustang Mach-E SUV. If you have been living under a rock for a while, you might ask, “what’s a Mach-E?” It’s Ford’s version of a Sport Utility Electric Vehicle. At Napleton News, we’re all about the Sport. Read on to learn more!

What exactly is the Mustang Mach-E?

Moving in the Mustang Mach-E

The answer to a question no one asked, or did they? The new Ford Mustang Mach-E SUV is an electric Sport SUV from the makers of the original Mustang. Sadly, that’s the only actual car that Ford now makes, thanks to a love in the consumer marketplace for SUVs. Hey, we can’t account for everyone’s taste but we like the way this “Mustang” looks.

The Mach-E is powered by a pair of electric motors (one on each axle) for a combined total of 346 horsepower and 428 lb-ft of torque. Zero to 60 mph comes in at five seconds.

Battery power comes from a 70 kWh battery for the standard model. The Mach-E GT and Rally versions, like our sampler, will come with the 91 kWh extended range battery. That battery is good for 310 e-mpg.

In the grand scheme of things, it may be quick from the stoplight but on the charger, it’s another story. Using a DC fast charger is your best bet, but at 45 minutes to go from 10 to 80 percent, it’s no Speedy Gonzalez. Plan on approximately 11 hours to charge using a 240-volt home charger.

How does the Mach-E look?

Squint for a bit and you will actually see some Mustang in this electrified SUV. Although much larger than the Mustang coupe, it still features some recognizable DNA from the Mustang brand. That includes the LED headlamps, and signature Mustang taillights.

Bold front fenders and rear shoulders add to the dynamic appearance of the Mach-E. There’s also a stylized looking long nose and short rear deck that made Mustang famous. Our Rally edition includes a higher ride height, rear spoiler and white wheels with 19-inch performance tires.

What about inside the Mach-E EV?

The interior of the new Mustang Mach-E.

Think of the new Mustang Mach-E SUV as an EUV (electric utility vehicle) with great seats. No, really, they are excellent! We were surprised to find that this high-zoot Rally model was only equipped with heated but not ventilated seating, though. That was although during our very brief Florida cold snap, we did need to flip the switch for the seats and steering wheel to warm up.

It’s a well-sorted place of business inside the Mach-E. Starting with the new, rather streamlined display screen and the iPad-like infotainment screen. That screen, though, feels like you are looking at one of those huge smart TVs in your local BestBuy store. The gear selector dial may be a bit off-putting to first timers: It spins freely, so keep an eye on it when placing it in park or drive, or any gear for that matter.

The driver’s seat is infinitely adjustable, while the rear seat features plenty of legroom for six footers and above. Speaking of the rear seat, they are 60:40 “split and folds” for an extended area of cargo space.

All juiced up and ready to go.

After an excessively long time on the charger, for our tastes anyway, we were ready to go. We like the space age sound that comes from switching to reverse out of the driveway and then quickly rotating the gear selector dial to drive.

Acceleration is brisk, as we have come to expect from EVs. Suspension is handled by BWI’s MagneRide system. It was developed by GM offshoot Delphi Automotive, which went bankrupt shortly afterward before being acquired by Beijing West Industries. The system is used in many cars including Lamborghini, Ferrari, Land Rover and Chevrolet. It enables the suspension system to adapt to the road conditions as they happen. It’s one of our favorite features on this and other performance vehicles.

The rear spoiler adds to the performance look of the Mach-E

We spent the first day hunting around for how to get into one-pedal driving mode. It turns out that it was buried in the menu of the infotainment screen. Finally finding it, we enjoyed the driving coach that lets you know how much energy you have recovered from braking. It was just the thing to make rush hour traffic more interesting.

The Mustang Mach-E Rally is clearly not the car for everyone. It’s a great city car taking you from home to work and around town. If you have the time to wait for the high-power chargers to do their thing, it is clearly a viable option. For others consider it a second vehicle or one that you wouldn’t use on a long trip where timing was critical.
