Honda News & Reviews

The Honda Civic Type R: A quick preview

The 2023 Honda Civic Type R is the most powerful model in Civic history. It also happens to be the most powerful Honda production vehicle offered on these shores. This new Civic goes on sale in the fall and will offer class-leading performance and the best driving experience in the “Hot Hatch” category to date. At least that’s how Honda wants to describe things. Those of us here at Napleton News can’t wait to find out for ourselves!

The Civic Type R features racetrack-proven engineering, which delivers extreme performance and passion both on the road and on the racetrack.

The Civic Type R: Track tested.

Through the windshield of the Civic Type R

The new Honda Civic Type R underwent track validation at the Japanese Suzuka Circuit and the famed Nurburgring course in Germany. Known as the most challenging racetrack in the world, it was one site used to validate the Type R’s driving chops.

Under the Civic’s hood is an updated version of Honda’s award-winning K20C1 engine. It features a redesigned turbocharger and an increased air intake flow rate. Its exhaust system is more efficient than ever.

The turbo four-cylinder powering the Honda Civic Type R

The turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine delivers a stout 315 horsepower a 6,500 rpm and 310 lb-ft of torque at 2,600 rpm. This is a bump up of 9 horsepower and 15 lb-ft respectively. Power is very dense as a result, producing 157.8 horsepower per liter.

As an added bit of oomph, the active exhaust valve opens at higher revs to enhance the overall sound and passion of the power coming from underhood.

The entire package goes together with the Type R’s six-speed manual transmission. It helps the driver achieve a more direct connection with the Type R to the point they act as one.

11 generations strong.

The new Honda Civic Type R results from 11 generations of Civics. It now features a more rigid body structure with improved dynamics and refinement. That includes 1.4 inches for a smoother ride with greater stability. At 107.7 inches, it boasts the longest wheelbase in its class.

Through the twisties in a Civic Type R

The new Civic Type R will be built at the Honda Yorii Plant in Japan. The 2.0-liter Turbo engine will be assembled at Honda’s Anna Engine factory in Sidney, Ohio.

Delivery of the 2023 Honda Civic Type R will begin in fall 2023. Stay tuned to Napleton News for more information!

I've loved everything on wheels: Trains, Planes and definitely Automobiles. I am constantly in search of the latest in new technology, which makes our lives better each day, but will always respect the classics. You can't continue forward without first taking a look back at where you've been.
