Hyundai Hope On Wheels Continues To Fund COVID-19 Testing

Hyundai Hope On Wheels (HHOW) has donated another $100,000 to fund open COVID-19 testing. This time, the charitable arm of Hyundai Motor America is partnering with multiple sources in the Boyle Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles to ramp up drive-thru testing efforts.

Previously, HHOW donated $2 million to fund drive-thru testing in various parts of the country in late March, when the outbreak first starting sweeping through the United States. The charitable non-profit worked in good faith again in April to double its support of drive-thru testing.

“When the U.S. first began to grapple with the COVID-19 pandemic in March, we knew testing would be our first line of defense,” said José Muñoz, President and CEO, Hyundai Motor North America. “We are pleased to continue funding our testing strategy and support our neighbors in Boyle Heights who have been disproportionately affected by the novel coronavirus.”

Flash forward to today and HHOW is continuing to do its part to bring valuable resources to those areas that need it most. Hyundai’s example is proof that no matter what business you’re in, you can make a significant impact with a little research and allocation of resources.

Some areas of the country need better access to COVID-19 testing than others, particularly low-income neighborhoods in major cities. Boyle Heights is a predominately Latino neighborhood positioned in East Los Angeles.

The federal government has deemed this neighborhood as a Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA), with roughly two-thirds of the population living below the poverty level. To make matters worse, the community is considered to be a hotspot for the spread of the virus.

“We know that hardworking families in East Los Angeles and Boyle Heights are more likely to live in multigenerational housing conditions and are more likely to work in essential service jobs that increase their exposure to the coronavirus, which is why I am committed to expanding access to COVID-19 testing, healthcare, and other services for all people,” said Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda L. Solis.

HHOW is working hand-in-hand with Los Angeles authorities to make drive-thru testing highly accessible for those who need it most. The Boyle Heights COVID-19 testing center is located at 1724 Pennsylvania Avenue in Los Angeles. Online reservations are available to the general public at covid19.lacounty.gov/testing.
