At the end of March, the Hyundai Hope On Wheels (HHOW) program announced that they were donating $2 million for COVID-19 drive-thru testing centers. The automaker is now doubling that effort with $4.3 million in grants that will be used at 22 different hospitals throughout the country.
“As a global automaker, we continue to monitor the COVID-19 situation and its potential harm to the U.S. and beyond, ” said José Muñoz, President and CEO of Hyundai Motor North America. “A best practice that was crucial in South Korea’s handling of the coronavirus was drive-thru testing.”
Hyundai also announced an in-kind donation of 65,000 COVID-19 RT-PCR tests developed by Seegene, a South Korea-based global leader in multiplex molecular diagnostics. Seegene’s test can simultaneously detect three different genes (N, E, and RdRP) of SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for COVID-19, according to a press release from Hyundai.
“The COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic has tragically impacted hundreds of thousands of lives with disease and millions more who are quarantined in the U.S.,” said Dr. Helen Cha Roberts, President, Seegene Technologies. “By supporting testing, Hyundai has stepped up as a global leader to provide an invaluable resource that will serve impacted Americans at this most critical time while also assisting to prevent further spread of the virus.”
There are over 800 Hyundai dealerships throughout the United States, eight of which belong to the Ed Napleton Automotive Group. The family-owned automotive group remains committed to the safety and well-being of each community they operate within. Partnering with a responsible automaker like Hyundai is one way the two have teamed up to help combat this pandemic.
Even though the state of the world appears grim, there is plenty of positive action taking place. The HHOW program made the following video to highlight the importance of banding together during a difficult time, giving us one example of how we can weather this storm.
