Automakers Hyundai and Kia have made great strides in improving the efficiency of their electric vehicles (EV) through the use of a new heat pump technology. By recycling heat, the all-electric driving range of the EVs are not impacted by certain weather elements like low temperatures.
“Hyundai and Kia’s heat pump is a leading heat management innovation that maximizes the distance that Hyundai and Kia EVs can travel on a single charge, scavenging waste heat to warm the cabin,” according to a press release from the Hyundai Media Center. “It enables EV drivers to heat their car’s cabin in cold weather without significantly impacting electric driving range, unlike other EVs.
Car experts are aligned in their opinion that the new heat pump technology used by Hyundai and Kia is at the forefront of the industry. Now in its sixth year of existence, the technology was first used in the 2014 Kia Soul EV. The heat pump used in this model would capture waste heat given off by the Soul’s electrical components, and recycle that energy to heat the cabin more efficiently.
Flash forward to today and significant improvements have been made in this heat pump technology. The innovations for 2020 mean that Hyundai and Kia EVs offer a more consistent range in temperatures where other EVs start to see a significant decline in the distance possible from a single charge.
The result of the new heat pump technology means more durable and reliable EVs, which is a factor that scares off drivers who are new to the world of electric cars. Knowing the exact amount of mileage you have on your charge will turn skeptics into believers, and it all starts with the technology developed by Hyundai and Kia.
