Hyundai Partners With Canoo To Develop New Platform For Future EVs

Hyundai Motor Group just announced a joint partnership with Canoo to co-develop an electric vehicle (EV) platform based on the California-based company’s proprietary design.

Upcoming electric models from Hyundai will be designed using the innovative technology developed by Canoo. Using a simple design, these EVs will have a skateboard platform to house the most critical components of the vehicle with a strong emphasis on functional integration.

By ensuring that every component of the platform is fulfilling as many functions as possible, the overall design is reduced in size which provides more interior cabin space and a more cost-effective EV offering for the car-buying public.

“We were highly impressed by the speed and efficiency in which Canoo developed their innovative EV architecture, making them the perfect engineering partner for us as we transition to become a frontrunner in the future mobility industry,” said Albert Biermann, Head of Research & Development, Hyundai Motor Group.

The collaboration between Canoo and Hyundai Motor Group will effectively double down on the Korean automaker’s commitment to invest $87 billion over the next five years to foster future growth. The next part of this initiative will be a $52 billion investment in future technologies through 2025 to get these models to a place where they are widely available.

“We will collaborate with Canoo engineers to develop a cost-effective Hyundai platform concept that is autonomous ready and suitable for mass adoption,” said Biermann.

Based out of Torrance, just outside of Los Angeles, Canoo has completely reimagined the way EVs should be designed. Each skateboard platform works as a self-contained unit that can be used in multiple models, making them more versatile.

“We have been working diligently to develop a bold new electric vehicle and partnering with a global leader like Hyundai is a validating moment for our young company,” said Ulrich Kranz, Co-Founder of Canoo. “It is a real honor for us to help Hyundai explore EV architecture concepts for their future models.”
