Hyundai News & Reviews

The Hyundai IONIQ 6 is a tease in streamliner clothing

It’s jolting news. (We couldn’t resist.) With the new Hyundai IONIQ 6, Hyundai is going all-in with electric vehicles. But you already knew that. Following the introduction of the IONIQ 5 EV, it’s only natural that the brand brings forth the numerical successor to the 5 and call it the IONIQ 6! Here at Napleton News, we are huge fans of electrification and are ready to take the next step when the timing is right.

What does the Hyundai IONIQ 6 look like?

Squint from a distance and you’ll see something that looks like it should be wearing a three-pointed star in the grille. It’s built using a new buzzword, at least for Hyundai, in that it is more streamlined than ever. An auto scribe went so far as to describe it as “cyberpunk,” but we’re having a tough time wrapping our heads around that one. One thing is for sure: A specific company building EVs in Northern California has never really had to deal with competition until now. They better up their game and fast.

The IONIQ 6 rides on Hyundai’s E-GMP platform that underpins its Hyundai IONIQ 5 sibling and Kia EV6. Outside, it utilizes inspirations from the streamliner era of industrial design. Think of diesel locomotives designed by Raymond Loewy, the Father of Streamlining. The Hyundai design features a prominently-rounded nose to gently push through the air. A swept-back roofline helps smooth turbulence as it flows away behind the vehicle.

What’s new about the IONIQ 6?

The Interior of the Ioniq 6.

How about everything? From the nose to the rear, Hyundai has attempted to build the IONIQ 6 ethically and uniquely with efficiency at every turn. While the exterior features a design efficiency to take advantage of its powertrain, the interior was developed to maximize interior space. Hyundai states the IONIQ 6 was designed with the diverse lifestyles of their customers in mind instead of a one-size-fits-all approach.

How about the exterior?

This electric streamliner appeals to the customer’s desire for a stylish vehicle. At the same time, though, it also caters to their desires to do the right thing in lessening their carbon footprint. It has a drag coefficient of 0.21 Cd, thanks to its low nose. Active air flaps open and close as needed to cool or warm the vehicle’s mechanical bits.

Wheel gap reducers eliminate trapped air, while available slim digital side mirrors cheat the wind rushing by. At the rear, an elliptical winged spoiler with winglets helps to trim turbulence further for peak efficiency.

The wrap-up

Details were pretty sketchy when Hyundai teased the photos of the new IONIQ 6. But all good things come to those who wait. In this case, the World Premiere will occur in three locations simultaneously. It can be viewed at K-Pop Square in Seoul, Korea. The second location is Picadilly Circus in London, with the third reveal occurring in New York’s Times Square.

We promise to bring more info to you as it becomes available! In the meantime, please check back with us at Napleton.News
