The 2026 Sportage HEV pauses in reflection
The Kia Sportage Hybrid is like a Swiss Army Knife packaged as an SUV. Start with good mileage, great looks, and enough oomph to make for an interesting drive. You’ll see what we mean. Here at Napleton News, you had us at good mileage. But we digress.
It’s a compact SUV that has a bit of attitude. That’s because it boasts power, great mileage, a great ride and more. The Kia Sportage Hybrid gets its power from a gas/electric hybrid 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine/motor that gets a five horsepower bump to 232 ponies over the 2025 model engine. As a bonus, it’s 45 more horses stronger than the regular gas-powered Sportage with its standard 187 hp four-pot engine.
This powertrain is coupled to an actual six-speed automatic transmission, as opposed to those droning (yes, droning!) continuously-variable transmissions (CVT) found on other compact SUVs. The Sportage LX is a front-drive mileage leader at 42 mpg, while the others in the lineup include all-wheel drive as a standard offering and estimated to get 35 mpg, according to EPA estimates.
Possessing a swoopy design, the Kia Sportage has a look that is both aggressive and futuristic at the same time. A matrix grille starts things off, with angular “elephant ear” style headlights in amber. These draw the eyes toward flowing side panel lines with a tapered rear deck that swoops downward in a style that draws the eyes toward the Sportage’s hips.
The elephant in the room, er, interior with the Kia Sportage Hybrid, is a dual screen 12.3-inch display. That results in a screen that is more than two-feet wide. There’s a largish ten-inch head-up display to keep your eyes forward facing. The confusing dual-duty climate/infotainment control is here. It’s still a bit daunting figuring it out, but in a way that is less so than before.
Our seats were covered in Kia’s SynTex, which is a synthetic version of bovine material that is almost as good as the original (real cowhide). Front seat legroom is as you would expect. The rear seat has over 41 inches of legroom, and as an added bonus, rear seat heaters and air conditioning vents.
The Kia Sportage Hybrid is so conventional that it’s not surprising at all. But don’t equate conventional with boring. It’s anything but. Aside from its good looks, there is suitable power and control from the Sportage Hybrid that will get you virtually everywhere.
Mileage range was spectacular, averaging about 42 miles per gallon with a range of over 600 miles per tankful. That’s quite an accomplishment in anyone’s book.
Acceleration is quite peppy for an SUV and improves immensely when the hybrid-electric motor kicks in. It’s no speed demon but you can feel the subtle push into your seat as you squeeze the skinny pedal. Speaking of skinny pedals, we dig driving in “one pedal” driving mode. In case you haven’t experienced it before let us tell you about it.
In one pedal drive mode, drivers can get by driving with one pedal. Step on the gas to get moving. Drive as normal and all is good. Then, when it comes time to hit the brakes (not in a panic move) when driving normally, lift your foot off the accelerator to feel the car brake. This serves two purposes: First, it slows down the vehicle, and second, it returns energy to the on-board batteries powering the hybrid powertrain.
Another cool feature is the rearview monitor that appear on the dashboard where the tachometer and speedometer appear. Flick on your left turn signal and the view in your blind spot appears. Flick right and your right blind spot camera appears where the tachometer/charge gauge appear. It offers a better view of what is beside and behind you than a simple twist of your head.
The flat-top/flat-bottom steering wheel is another interesting feature that shrinks the wheel diameter without ruining its functionality.
Being well thought-out, and loaded with features, the Kia Sportage Hybrid has become one of our favorite road-tripping vehicles.
