It took a few years, but the new 2021 Lexus LC 500 Convertible was introduced to the motoring media at AutomobilityLA. Everyone else knows it as the Los Angeles International Auto Show. Long on the wishlist of Lexus fans everywhere, the company finally showed the fruits of your messages to the brand. This one is slated to be a 2021 model, so expect it sometime in the Spring or Summer of 2020.

Long an aspirational favorite, the Lexus LC lineup has consisted of two powertrains with one body style. In this case, a Hybrid or a naturally-aspirated V8, each powering the LC Coupe. Finally, Lexus chose the LA Auto Show to debut the LC500 Convertible with naturally-aspirated 5.0-liter V8 making 471 horsepower at 7,100 rpm. Torque slots in at 398 lb-ft at 4,800 rpm. That engine joins a direct-shift 10-speed automatic for efficiency and performance. We are almost sure a new Hybrid version will follow.

TOP-DOWN DESIGN

The LC 500 Convertible was conceived from the top down. Lexus designers engineered a ton of flexibility in their new topless baby. It allowed them to build a car that can safely survive the elements while maintaining its legendary performance ride. They used “Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE) to match the ride qualities of the Coupe to an LC 500 Convertible.

What’s that, you say? Topless in the middle of Winter? That’s right. The new LC 500 Convertible comes equipped with a specially designed HVAC system that adjusts the temperature automatically. that’s irregardless of whether the top is up or down. The Lexus Climate Concierge with Upper Body Heating automatically manages the air conditioner, seat heaters, neck heaters and steering-wheel heater. This way, the cabin is at the perfect temperature inside, even though it may be less than optimal outside.

That four-layer roof can doff its top in 15 seconds, at speeds up to 31 mph.

QUIET OR NOT. IT’S YOUR CHOICE

Lexus engineers reduced as much extraneous outside noise as possible, thanks to the shape of its beltline and a specially-designed rear molding. The result is a top that suppresses wind from entering. A transparent polycarbonate wind deflector helps to minimize outside noise, especially in city and urban situations. Active Noise Control (ANC) is also on board to help suppress unwanted harshness from entering the cabin.

On the other hand, there is nothing like the throaty sound of a big 5.0-liter V8 engine. Lexus engineers developed a sound pipe to deliver V8 sound into the cabin, which is guaranteed to exhilarate.

Inside, the Lexus LC 500 Convertible is a tech tour-de-force, with a 10.3-inch split-screen multimedia display. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are here, and Amazon’s Alexa is also along for the ride. These and other Lexus Safety Features are along, too, including its pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, Lane Departure Alert, Lane Keep Assist and All-speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control. Lexus says we are only scratching the surface here.

THERE’S MORE.
