The new Mazda Electrified Powertrain Technology

Coming soon to a dealership near you

The new Mazda Electrified Powertrain is the latest to incorporate driving enjoyment from behind the wheel. Mazda is known throughout the world for its Zoom-Zoom ethos, and aims to continue that fun-to-drive feeling long into the future. Napleton News is eager to plug you into the latest information. The future looks very bright, indeed.

The Mazda Electrified Powertrain and what it does for you.

Mazda Electric Motor

The Mazda Electrified Powertrain will first be used on the Mazda MX-30 EV. A battery electric vehicle, it stores its energy in battery cells, which sends the current to electric motors. This means the vehicle only runs on an electric charge. Currently, the MX-30 EV is only available in California, but it is almost inevitable that eventually it would appear across the country.

What happens when the charge (aka the thrill) is gone?

It’s just like with a gasoline engine. When the fuel is gone, the engine stops. The same concept applies with battery electric vehicles. Think of your Mazda MX-30 EV as a cellphone on wheels. Do you remember the feeling you get when you leave home without a charger and your smartphone has only a 30 percent charge remaining? That’s called range anxiety. It happens with people in battery electric vehicles, too.

According to a Mazda release, the time it will take to charge a BEV depends on the power of the charger being used. Based on kilowatt output, there are three levels of chargers as seen below:

  • Level 1 AC Charger (120 Volt). This charger can go from 20% to 80% in just under 14 hours.
  • Level 2 AC Charger (240 Volt). Capable of charging from 20% to 80% in just under three hours. This is a typical charger found in home, workspace, and public chargers. It requires specialized installation by a professional electrician.
  • Level 3 DC Charger (50 kW). Can boost the Mazda’s charge from 20% to 80% in about 36 minutes. It’s our charger of choice, but they are still rare.

The Uniqueness of the Mazda Electrified Powertrain.

Charging up the Mazda MX-30 EV

Earlier, we mentioned Mazda’s unique Zoom-Zoom feeling for those lucky enough to get behind the wheel. They result from:

Linear Power Delivery. Mazda engineering has designed its BEV technology to feel natural and as intuitive as possible to a first-time EV buyer.

Great Driving Dynamics. Improved handling thanks to expertly designed of driving elements. These include a tire load distribution of 40%-60% front to rear, a 2.1-inch lower center of gravity and an overall stiffness that results from a stiffer, more rigid platform.

Electric G-Vectoring Control Plus. Also known as e-GVC Plus, it matches the driver’s intentions when steering because of the instant response that is characteristic of electric motors. This generator enhances the consistency, response time and precision for a more natural handling experience.

On the horizon for Mazda.

There’s more to come. And it won’t be confined to California, either. Globally, Mazda expects to release 13 new electrified vehicles between 2022 and 2025. This menu includes five hybrid electric vehicles, five plug-in hybrid electric vehicles and three pure electric vehicles. By 2030, all the vehicles Mazda builds will be electrified or pure electric vehicles. Of that number, pure electric will account for 25 percent of the lineup.

I've loved everything on wheels: Trains, Planes and definitely Automobiles. I am constantly in search of the latest in new technology, which makes our lives better each day, but will always respect the classics. You can't continue forward without first taking a look back at where you've been.
