A night on South Beach was the perfect setting for the North American debut of the new Genesis GV80 Luxury SUV. Revealed at The Temple House, which is actually a re-purposed Synagogue, it presented an entirely new chapter in luxury for the Genesis brand.
“GV80 represents the essence of the innovative spirit of Genesis,” said William Lee, Executive Vice President and Global Head of the Genesis brand. The GV80 is the production version of the original GV80 concept SUV that was first seen at the 2017 New York Auto Show.
A collaboration between Genesis Design Studios located in South Korea, The United States and Germany, it incorporates the “Athletic Elegance” design language that is already present on its Genesis G70, G80 and G90 siblings. All the familiar design elements are here, too. They include the “Crest Grille” that seemingly spans from corner to corner when viewed head-on.
Power lines above each wheel emphasize the vehicle’s stance and are led by the sophisticated LED lighting that helps to make up the quad lamps and their twin lighting bars, whose theme is carried on throughout the Genesis GV80.
The Quad Lamp graphic will become the most recognizable, unique signature of Genesis design, as the simplest of lines communicate a distinct identity,” said Luc Donckerwolke, Executive Vice President, Chief Design Officer of Hyundai Motor Group. The G-Matrix pattern that appears from the exterior lighting has been inspired by beautiful orchids seen when diamonds are illuminated by light.
The wide interior of the GV80 has been emphasized by the sleek, thin air vents that run across the passenger compartment. A new 14.5-inch split-screen infotainment display screen occupies the main area above the center console. Further back on the console is a shift-by-wire shift knob. There is also handwriting recognition that allows the driver to set a destination without having to operate a keyboard on the navigation screen.
ROAD ACTIVE NOISE CANCELLATION
This new SUV features the first application of Road Active Noise Cancellation (RANC) technology to reduce road noise while driving. Unlike some noise cancelling systems that work through physical technology, such as baffles and sound deadening material, RANC generates out-of-phase sound waves that analyze road noise in real time, dramatically reducing irregular, simultaneous road noise.
A GO-ANYWHERE POWERTRAIN
While the GV80 is based on a rear-wheel-drive platform, all-wheel-drive is an available option. Power will come from a buyer’s choice of turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder or a turbocharged 3.5-liter V6. Power and torque ratings are still to be determined. Power delivery will occur through the Genesis eight-speed automatic transmission. The suspension will be an electronically controlled suspension with road preview.
