Buyers of the RAM 2500 will have a choice of two different powertrains. They begin with the standard 405 horsepower, 429 lb-ft of torque 6.4-liter gas engine. That’s a start, but it might not do the trick for the heavy duty crowd. In that case, have we got a deal for you: Opt for the 430-hp 6.7-liter Cummins Turbo Diesel inline six-cylinder engine producing a best-in-class 1075 lb-ft of torque. According to some in the motoring press, the new Diesel is essentially what was last year’s high-output diesel. Both engines are mated to an 8-speed Torqueflite (by ZF) automatic transmission that is matched to its respective engines.

An adaptive air suspension with coil springs in the rear helps to keep things calm and smooth on the highway and off-road alike. As a result, this Laramie rides a lot smoother than it looks.

Looks count, too.

Following a refresh for 2025, the new 2025 RAM 2500 Heavy Duty is laden with new grilles, taillights and sharply designed LED headlights. The look depends on which model you buy, but our Laramie featured an aggressive dark gray look that is intimidating to those peering in their rearview mirrors.

The RAM 2500 is a high-riding ¾ ton pickup that is quite massive. You need steps to get into it. The company won’t let you down and supplies a set of big honkin’ running boards on both sides. While most vehicles that have running boards today just manage to get your pant legs dirty, these actually work.

Our heavy-duty Crew Cab included a 6.4-foot bed with a payload capacity of 4,320 pounds and a tow rating of up to 20,000 pounds.

What about inside the RAM 2500 Laramie 4×4?

Choose your interior: the RAM 2500 can be as utilitarian or luxurious as your wallet and needs allow. With our sampler, Stellantis went high-zoot when outfitting this baby. As a result, it includes a full leather interior, RAM’s Uconnect 5 Navigation system with 12.0-inch touch screen display, SiriusXM radio, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Tuneage is provided by an Alpine 9-speaker audio system with subwoofer. Wait a second, you say! Trust us, nine speakers are more than adequate for this Crew Cab arrangement.

Seating is super comfortable and suitable for long-haul road trips or around-town jaunts as needed. The front thrones are heated and ventilated too! The one thing we did notice was the RAM did not have a telescoping steering wheel. After several minutes of fishing around for a way to adjust our reach, we found a button that moves the pedals closer or further away. Voila! Adjustments complete!

Between the front seats is a bin large enough to swallow a laptop or even a mirrorless camera. There’s also a USB media hub with both USB-A and C outlets for almost every kind of current electronic device.

The rear seat is almost Limo-like in size and width. There is enough legroom for someone to sit on the floor although we would not recommend it. Additionally, there is underseat storage to keep things hidden from prying eyes.

Living with Diesel should always be this easy.

Sure, as with most diesel engines there is a tiny bit of racket when you crank it up in the morning. Eventually, everything warms up and this growling cat returns to a purring kitten. The first thing we notice is that this is a big truck. A really big truck. But it’s not so big as to be unwieldy.

The Diesel option tacks another $12,995 to the bottom line. The multi-view cameras around the vehicle help keep an eye on your surroundings, while the fisheye side mirrors keep check of your blind spots.

Power may seem a bit sluggish as you slowly getting underway. The reality is, though, this beast doesn’t play around. Power comes on in a torrent-when you need it. Otherwise expect the RAM 2500 to behave as any other truck. And that’s a good thing.

We’ve been told to keep an eye in the rearview mirror when towing. That’s because sometimes this ride feels as though there is nothing out back to drag you down. That, too, is a good thing!
