Alfa Romeo took advantage of the F1 Miami Formula 1 race to introduce their new Alfa Romeo Tonale to the South Florida market. All-new for 2023, the Alfa Romeo Tonale is the model to mark the brand’s metamorphosis from a primarily gas-powered portfolio to a lineup that looks forward to a new era of electrification. Napleton News was there to see it.
The Tonale will be the company’s first electrified model with a plug-in hybrid powertrain in the United States. The Tonale PHEV Q4 AWD compact crossover will begin to arrive in early 2023. PHEV power will come from a 1.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with an Aisin six-speed automatic transmission powering the front axle. On the rear axle is a 90-kilowatt (121-horsepower) electric motor. System output for the gas/electric combo tops out at 272 horsepower.
The PHEV utilizes a 15.5-kWh lithium-ion battery that will give an electric-only range of 30 miles before the gasoline engine kicks in. Charging with a level-2 charger will take approximately 2.5 hours.
It will also be available as the Tonale Q4 AWD. It will be powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and a ZF 9-speed automatic transmission. Alfa Romeo says it will deliver 256 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque.
The Tonale includes Alfa Romeo’s Frequency Selective Damping (FSD) suspension tuning system. The brand predicts it will become the benchmark in driving dynamics for the segment.
In addition to the innovative powertrains, the new Tonale will offer, as standard, the Uconnect 5 infotainment system. It operates through a 10.25-inch center touchscreen display and a 12.3-inch driver’s cluster. The company says it’s a best-in-class offering worthy of the Alfa brand.
Suppose Formula 1 Management (Part A) got together with the Miami Dolphins ownership (Part B) and decided to hold a race in Miami (Gardens). In that case, it’s only logical that twenty world-class drivers (Part C) would also be there. Well, A and B did get together and the results are the Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix that occurred on Sunday, May 8, 2022. Naturally, there are twenty doses of Part C, too.
Alfa Romeo’s Formula 1 drivers could get away from their other duties and obligations to pop into to greet guests at the reveal. Veteran Finnish pilot Valterri Bottas joined new teammate Guanyu Zhou of China to discuss the Tonale and pose for pictures. Formula W driver Sabré Cook was also on hand. Keep an eye on Cook. She’s rehabbing a recent injury but should be cleared to race again soon.
