Aston Martin Racing heads to Shanghai this weekend for the third leg of the 2019-2020 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC), and a chance to add more hardware to the shelf after winning two races in Japan.
Currently, Aston Martin lies second in the manufacturer standings and has a chance to jump in the rankings depending upon what happens this weekend in China. Aston Martin Racing Team Principal Paul Howarth has high hopes considering that the GTE performed well in Shanghai in the past.
“The Aston Martin Vantage GTE has proven to be a competitive proposition in both of the opening two rounds of this FIA WEC season and of course it won both classes in Japan,” said Howarth. “But we also know that we are up against world-class opposition and that it is attention to detail, strong execution and consistency that will enable us to make the best use of a car that can contend at the front. We must be vigilant and leave nothing on the table as we return to the scene of the Vantage GTE’s first victory.”
Drivers Marco Sørensen and Nicki Thiim are just one point off the GT championship lead following their dominant victories in Japan, according to a press release from Aston Martin.
This won’t be the first time these drivers have visited Shanghai. However, this will be the first time Aston Martin Racing will compete at this track with the new four-hour race format.
“We go back to Shanghai with some good memories from when Marco and I took the first victory with the Vantage GTE last year,” said Thiim. “We want to continue this fantastic streak in Shanghai, especially after winning last time out as well. Shanghai is a great place to visit, and it’s one of the tracks that suits the characteristics of the Vantage GTE most of all.”
The third round of the WEC will take place at noon local time at the Shanghai International Circuit in China. This track has a total of 16 turns, two of which generate very high g-forces at turns 7 and 8. The track also includes some of the longest straightaways out of any other track in the WEC.
