The BMW X5 xDrive45e at speed.
The latest member of its Sport Activity Vehicle family, BMW introduces its new 2021 BMW X5 xDrive45e SAV. A plug-in hybrid version of the BMW X5, it’s the second-generation of one of the most popular BMWs on the road today.
The BMW X5 xDrive45e is a super ultra-low emissions vehicle (SULEV), which, depending on where you live, may offer additional benefits such as high-occupancy lane access for owners of alternatively powered vehicles.
The new xDrive45e is built at BMW Plant Spartanburg in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Napleton.news has had a chance to visit and we can tell you It’s BMW’s largest global production plant and also the site of BMW’s high-voltage battery assembly area, which is responsible for powering the X5 xDrive45e and the BMW X3 xDrive30e.
Power for the new X5 xDrive45e comes from a new 3.0-liter 6-cylinder TwinPower turbocharged internal combustion engine and electric power generator unit. It replaces a 2.0-liter TwinPower turbocharged from the previous generation X5 model. The combined power output from the new drivetrain is 389 horsepower. That’s an increase of 81 horsepower over the previous version, with a torque increase of 111 lb-ft, bringing the new peak up to 443 lb-ft of torque.
That results in what BMW calls a prodigious amount, which is good enough for up to 7,200 pounds of towing capability.
The X5’s high-voltage battery grows from 12 kWh to 24 kWh. As a result, electric-only mileage climbs from 14 miles to an EPA estimated 30-mile range. Top speed while in battery-only mode climbs from 75 to 84 mph. The new battery system is positioned in the underbody portion of the X5. Its location helps to minimize battery intrusion into the cabin and cargo area with a minimal amount of displacement.
The new BMW X5 xDrive45e features three exciting drive modes that can tailor your driving styles to your moods and needs. They range from the following:
The new X5 gets its “X” by way of its new xDrive all-wheel-drive system. The drivetrain starts with a rear-bias and varies the flow of traction to the front wheels according to sensors that determine whether any particular wheel needs more traction than another.
The 3.0-liter V6 is mated to the standard 8-speed Sport Steptronic transmission that works with the navigation system in determining the right gearing for any particular stretch of mapped road. That way, the transmission is preparing to shift to maintain proper power at any given moment.
Finally, the standard dynamic damper control system varies the electrically adjustable shock absorbers to tighten up the suspension as needed, regardless of the terrain or road quality. Combined with the standard adjustable air suspension, the BMW X5 can “dial-in” the proper degree of adjustment for the road, and trip at hand.
