2022 Chevrolet Silverado High Country Crew Cab 4WD

As crooner Lyle Lovett says, it’s not big; it’s large. You could say the same thing about the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado High Country Crew Cab. Of course, he was talking about “His Large Band,” but you get our drift. Yes, the Chevrolet Silverado Crew Cab is big. But it’s also capable and even somewhat comfortable. Napleton News had a chance to give it a go. Here’s what we thought.

2022 Chevrolet Silverado High Country

High Style in the Chevrolet Silverado High Country Crew Cab

The only thing missing is a third row, but then you would be the Chevrolet Suburban instead of the Silverado. No matter, though, because inside, the Silverado is almost as luxurious and definitely on par with its competitors.

There are a variety of powerplants to move you along. The base engine choice is the 2.7-liter turbocharged inline-4 cylinder engine making 310 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque. It matches up to an 8-speed automatic transmission.

Next up is the 5.3-liter V8, which provides 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque. Like all engines above the 4-cylinder, these are mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission.

A 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6 cylinder diesel makes 277 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque. When equipped with the Max Towing Package, it can tug up to 13,300 pounds.

The Chevrolet 6.2-liter V8 with Dynamic Fuel Management

Finally, our High Country drifter features the 6.2-liter V8 making 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque. There’s none bigger, and those looking for the ultimate in luxury and performance need look no further.

Let’s look around outside.

2022 Chevrolet Silverado High Country 4WD from the rear

The Chevrolet Silverado was redesigned in 2019. Back then, it had more angles than a piece of Origami. Chevrolet designers have softened it a bit, but Transformer fans won’t be disappointed.

The trim level of Silverado that you choose determines the look of the grille. Order from a regular, extended cab or crew cab configuration, depending on how many will be riding with you. This also extends to the extension of the bed. (Nice pun, huh?) Take your pick of short, regular or long beds, depending on your need and model.

Speaking of models, there is the base Silverado Work Truck. Follow that with a Custom Trail Boss, Silverado LT, Silverado RST, Silverado ZR2 and premium High Country models.

2022 Chevrolet Silverado with Multi-Flex Tailgate

Available on many Silverado variants is one of the most trick optional features: The MultiFlex tailgate. It’s a step, a desk, a bed extender, a speaker enclosure and more, depending on how you outfit it. The possibilities are (nearly) endless.

Highlife on the inside.

The new Chevrolet Silverado High Country Crew Cab is the latest in high-end pickups from the General. We had already seen what it would look like with the introduction of the 2020 Chevrolet Suburban and now that it’s in the new Silverado, it just raises the wow factor that much higher.

The High Country interior

Higher-grade leather is a start, coupled with heated and ventilated front-row seats. We did miss the seat massagers that we recently experienced in the new Jeep Grand Cherokee, but that’s a story for another day. Other features grabbed our attention, including a large digital display screen showing all the gauges and other features. The new premium Bose audio system holds sway at the top-center of the dashboard. It’s higher than in previous models and offers a cleaner, clear look at the road ahead. A new 13.4-inch diagonal HD touchscreen included Google Built-in. Just sign into your Google Account and it brings your Google Chromebook to the truck. Well, almost. Just remember to sign out of your account if you ever sell it!

The Silverado’s Google screen.

The one thing that had us peeved was how it seemed impossible to plug in our iPhone for a charge without it trying to start up Apple CarPlay and take over from the Sirius XM that we were listening to. After it took the Bose system hostage, you had to go through several levels of menus to return to your previous app.

Behind the wheel of the Silverado High Country.

2022 Chevrolet Silverado High Country at speed

The Silverado is complete with the same features found in its competition, including a push-button starter, comfortable seating, etc. What it also has plenty of is power, performance and quietness. Although you may push this semi-big-rig through its paces, it never protests, squawks or makes any other untoward sounds.

Power was smooth and deliberate in nearly all situations. The 6.2-liter V8 offers oodles of power just when you needed it, and the 10-speed automatic transmission never went hunting. Accelleration was brisk and offered just enough grunt when heavy lifting, or in this case, towing, was required.

When the Silverado hits cruising speed, the V8 settles down by the use of its’ dynamic fuel management system for fuel savings. While GM’s old active fuel management system would automatically go from 8 to 4 cylinders, the new DFM system allows its sensors to choose from 17 different configurations for ultimate fuel efficiency. In other words, if the sensor only determines seven cylinders are needed, it will shut down the 8th.

These features, and an options list as extensive as a New York phone book, will make sure you can make your Chevrolet Silverado High Country Crew Cab truly your own.

I've loved everything on wheels: Trains, Planes and definitely Automobiles. I am constantly in search of the latest in new technology, which makes our lives better each day, but will always respect the classics. You can't continue forward without first taking a look back at where you've been.
