October 2, 2019 was a big day for Chevrolet fans around the world. It was the reveal day for the new 2020 Chevrolet C8 Corvettetingray Convertible. To most observers, that would be enough. But the Bow-Tie Brigade wasn’t finished yet. Almost before the applause died down for the Convertible, a loud brrrrrrap broke through the night air, signaling the surprise arrival of Chevrolet’s Corvette C8.R race car.
Following more than 60 years of Corvette racing history, Chevrolet introduced its first mid-engine GTLM race car that will be campaigning for the brand at racing venues throughout the world. Assisting in the effort was the fact that it was developed alongside the street Corvette in a joint effort between General Motors Design, Propulsion, Engineering and the Corvette Racing Team. The team, as campaigned by Pratt & Miller Engineering, has been testing the new C8.R since late 2018, on the track, even going so far as turning laps at Sebring International Raceway in Central Florida, and at the Nurburgring race course in Germany.
Details were sketchy at press time because Chevrolet is playing it close to the vest. They promised to release more information and specifications at the IMSA Petit LeMans race next week at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta, Saturday, October 12, 2019.
The C8.R No. 4 car will race in a new silver livery with yellow accents, inspired by the color of iconic Corvette concepts, including the 1973 Chevrolet Aerovette and the 1959 Corvette Stingray Racer. Its sister C8.R No. 3 car will feature the traditional yellow color scheme with silver accents that will continue the lineage of winning yellow Corvettes from the past 20 years.
Both C8.R race cars will make their racing debut at the Rolex 24 at Daytona in January 2020.
