Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is getting into the FCA Innovation Hub business. FCA and the Michigan Minority Supplier Development Council have partnered with a Silicon Valley-based tech accelerator. They have teamed up to develop an innovation hub that will help incubate start-up companies to the next level. FCA will join with other partners, including Plug and Play Tech Center, to open the facility in June.
The total operation will be called Plug and Play Detroit powered by AmplifyD. That’s apparently millennial shorthand for Amplify: Diversity. It will be open to all types of technology startups with an emphasis on those belonging to women and minorities.
The location for the hub has not been decided yet. Fiat Chrysler is a founding partner responsible for a significant investment in the FCA Incubator Hub. FCA, in a release, stated that other auto companies and corporate partners are expected to join the center.
“The automotive industry is at the crossroads of digital transformation, where automated driving, connectivity, electrification and shared mobility are all reshaping the future of mobility,” said Mark Stewart, COO of FCA’s North American Operations.
The company’s idea of joining with Plug and Play Detroit powered by AmplifyD will help to speed FCA’s research and development. These efforts will present access to an entire ecosystem of technology startups. The idea is the hub will allow a free-flow of ideas and innovations. This speeds adoption and implementationof new products into the automotive segment.
It’s not particularly sexy, but a technology hub is necessary at this moment of transition in the automotive industry. With a rapid shift from internal combustion to hybrid to electric powertrains, cutting edge technology will be at the forefront of automotive design. Such a hub will allow FCA (and 0thers) the opportunity to observe and adopt new technologies as they develop. The concept of rebadging existing technology or recalibrating a CPU chip is yesterday’s news. With this announcement, FCA is gearing up for the future and new vehicles you will find at Napleton CDJR dealerships around the country.
