2024 Mustang Mach-E GT eAWD

It looks like no other Mustang that we know of but the new Mustang Mach-E GT eAWD is still as potent as some that we have driven before. Think of it as Déjà vu all over again, except it really isn’t. Instead, it’s a case of the Mustang taking a look into the future. We here at Napleton News sincerely apologize to the ghost of Yogi Berra. But even if you’re not a baseball fan, hop in to see what this steed can do.

The Mustang Mach-E GT eAWD

What is it about the Ford Mustang Mach-E GT?

The first thing you do is look at it and ask yourself, is it a Mustang or not? Well, it is, kind of. It’s a four-door version of a high-riding sports car or crossover that will sort of remind you of its namesake as much as it won’t. The biggest change here is that it is an electric vehicle. Our Mach-E GT eAWD tester featured an extended range battery rated at 91 kWh, while the standard Mach-E carries a capacity of 70 kWh. Using a 240-volt charger takes a rather longish 11 hours to replenish itself. Going from 10-to-80% takes approximately 45 minutes in the Mach-E. Doing the same in a Hyundai Ioniq 5 cuts that charge time in half.

While the Mach-E Premium will get a range of 320 miles per charge, our GT Performance sample is an all-wheel drive model with a range of approximately 290 miles. The twin motors (one per axle) combine to make 480 horsepower and up to 634 lb-ft of torque. That’s good for a zero-to-60 mph sprint in 3.9 seconds.

Looks matter on the Mach-E

Imagine a stocky-looking Mustang that has a rather tall set of door panels. Oh, and four doors. That’s the basic look of the Mach-E. Squint a bit and you’ll see what appears like a Mustang rally car with huge wheels and protective side cladding. There’s even a faux grille that carries on the Mustang’s looks to a racy looking front splitter.

The view from the rear of the Mustang Mach-E

At the rear, the Mustang theme carries over to the triplet light set that reminds us immediately of where the Mach-E gets its DNA from. Above the hatch is an optional spoiler to help provide a little downforce and a lot more action.

Our Eruption Green Metallic Mach-E gave us the feeling we were driving Steve McQueen’s Bullitt Mustang…in crossover form. Our sampler also included a bronze appearance package which added highlights to the wheels, grille and badging. We think the red Brembo brake calipers did their part to set the car off nicely.

Inside the Mustang Mach-E

The dashboard of the Mach-E GT

Comfortable overall, the interior of the Mach-E is one that you wouldn’t get out of often. Comfortable seating relaxed us during our jaunts behind the wheel. The oversized 15.5-inch tablet-like touchscreen takes up a large amount of real estate on the dashboard. The one thing it seemed to lack was a series of buttons that would have been appreciated if they were here. On the center console is a rotary gear selector dial that is quickly a learned response. Everything appears functional with a place and purpose. The only piece of the cabin that appears like an afterthought is the 10 inch gauge display screen that is visible through the steering wheel.

The Cargo area of the GT.

The front seats offered great comfort, while the rear seats had a surprising amount of legroom. Going even further, we checked out what’s under the back hatch. We opened it to find 29.7 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seat. Fold the second row seatbacks forward and you’ll be rewarded with 59.7 cubic feet.

Behind the wheel of the Mustang Mach-E GT eAWD

Although our Mach-E GT tester was not a Premium trim model, it had a definite premium vibe inside. Well-done throughout, it exhibited a fit and finish that looks at home on cars costing much more.

The GT strikes a hero pose.

The ride quality was actually smoother than any “regular” version of a Mustang that we have ever been in. Acceleration was actually a hoot, especially when stepping on the “loud” pedal but if you have read this far, you’ll know there is no noise coming from under the hood. That’s because instead of an engine, the Mach-E has a “Frunk” (Front trunk).

Acceleration on the Mustang Mach-E GT is brisk, and just what the doctor ordered for getting past all the northerners clogging our roads in the southeast. It does tend to reach a peak and then taper off at around 79 mph. While most of the other Mustang Mach-E models are good for 320 miles of range, the GT achieves a range of around 290 miles. Realistically, though expect 260 miles, instead.

Still, the Mach-E GT impressed us, as few other EV models have. For that, Ford should be proud.
