The new 2023 Genesis G90 Sedan is the latest from Hyundai’s luxury division of sedans and SUVs. Totally new for 2023, it is out to give the Mercedes-Benz S Class a run for its money. Here at Napleton News, we’re all about saving money. But in the meantime, we are all about cruising around town in one sexy luxo-barge. Just how luxo is it? Read on for more!
Uniquely designed with a new long, elegant appearance, the Genesis G90 is the latest in uber-luxurious sedans from the high-end sister brand to South Korean automaker Hyundai. We think it’s a great thing that some brands still believe in sedans. Otherwise, the road would be filled with nothing but SUVs and pickup trucks. We say viva la difference!
The base Genesis G90 is equipped with a 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine making 375 horsepower and 391 lb-ft of torque. It provides better fuel economy than the previous base engine.
The outgoing (2022) G90 offered a V8 engine as an optional powertrain. That engine is no longer available. In its place is a new 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged mild-hybrid V6 with a built-in electric supercharger. Output is 409 horsepower with 405 lb-ft of torque. All G90 models are driven by an 8-speed automatic transmission, with the torque going to an all-wheel drive system.
The Genesis G90 rides on a cloud-like cushion thanks to its multi-chamber air suspension. It’s like others in the marketplace because it uses sensors to “read the road” and stiffen or soften the ride as necessary. Finally, the G90 is physically long, but doesn’t drive that way, thanks to rear-wheel steering.
We just mentioned the physical length of the G90, and yes, it is quite long. But it fits in with the competition, nearly matching up with the Audi A8, Lexus LS and of course, the Mercedes-Benz S Class.
Start with its bold shield grille. New for 2023 are thin-line LED head and taillights that wrap around from front and rear quarters. The look is stunning to us and one that hasn’t been copied much…yet.
The overall length of the G90 works to the passenger’s advantage, providing extra legroom in the rear, not to mention a rather spacious trunk.
The look of the G90’s interior is like what you would find in most of its competitors. That means fine woods, supple Nappa leather, massaging, heated and ventilated seats and more. There’s also a high-end Bang & Olufsen 3D Premium Audio System. Curiously, we find the Apple CarPlay and Android Auto apps to be wired only. That’s a surprise to us because we found wireless CarPlay in the Genesis’s corporate cousin, the Kia EV6.
Going further, we find a pair of 12.3-inch display screens side by side. The one to the left includes all the gauges a driver would need and then some, while the screen over the center console includes audio, mobile communications, climate, navigation and then some. There are settings for nearly every aspect of the car. Most even work well!
The seat massagers work very well to ease extended periods behind the wheel. Same for the ventilated effect of the thrones when you push the fan button. In other words, the cabin was totally luxed-out with enough room for a family of five, in the back seat alone. We kid, but the reality is the seating area and legroom is so large it felt as though we were in a living room rather than the backseat of a car.
What really got us though, were the door buttons. You read that correctly. Door buttons. Touch the square on the exterior handle and the door will open slightly for you to pull it further, especially when there is no traffic. Once you are in, there are a pair of buttons on the center console that close the doors with nary a thud. And best of all, you don’t need to touch them! They work automatically without a fuss.
Most cars have a single feature that amazes friends and neighbors alike. The door buttons on the Genesis G90 are that feature here.
Cruising in our land yacht car of the week is an epic experience that has you thinking of the good life. A comfortable ride in a gorgeous vehicle that looks at home dropping off dignitaries at an important event, and the next morning taking the shorties to school. And then you sit and think, “wait a second! This car is from Genesis, the highfalutin sister of the Hyundai brand!” Except here, it doesn’t seem so highfalutin at all.
Pushing the starter button sounds a variety of subtle chimes that signal the systems are up and ready to go, seats are buckled and more. It G90 has a rather tall tip-in that results from the auto-hold system that applies brakes when the car is completely stopped. After a while, it becomes a bit intrusive, which, thankfully, can be overridden. That’s a good thing.
Finally getting up to speed in the Genesis, we truly experience what cruising can be. Road noise disappears thanks to Noise Cancelation that is built into the car’s audio system. Still, it is a bit of a thrill when we step on the gas to feel the G90 take off. It seems to defy the laws of physics when you see how fast this large car goes and handles.
We were sad to see it leave our drive. But we were happy to see how far the Genesis line has come. Here’s to a bright future.
