The Hyundai IONIQ 5 Disney100

Available at select dealerships, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 Disney100 Platinum Edition is one of the latest special edition vehicles from the Korean automaker. But wait! You’re probably saying, “what’s the big whoop? It’s just another IONIQ 5.” That’s where you would be wrong, my friend. Standby as Napleton News breaks it all down for you.

What’s the Disney100 IONIQ 5 about?

The new Hyundai IONIQ 5 is an electric crossover utility vehicle constructed using Hyundai’s Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP). It is motivated by Hyundai’s 320 horsepower dual electric motor powertrain with all-wheel drive. The “5” features an impressive 303 mile range. It shows off its stature with specially-designed Disney-themed 20-inch alloy wheels. You may not realize it at first but with a gentle twist of your neck, you’ll see an outline of the Mickey Mouse Ears on the alloys. It’s a clever nod to the Magic Kingdom and all that the mouse is about.

There are other touches to signify that this is a Disney100 model. These include badging on the front fenders, embossed leather seating, Disney logo floormats, logos on the doorsills and a flash of Disney magic on the infotainment display screen on vehicle startup. This includes Disney-themed music, the Disney100 Logo and of course, pixie dust!

The exterior is painted in a Gravity Gold Matte finish. It’s highlighted by black H logos.

Looks are important with the IONIQ 5.

Sleek and subtle, the Hyundai IONIQ 5 goes out of its way to not be a show-off like certain other electric vehicles that begin with a “T.” Instead, we have a vehicle that looks a bit like a sporty four-door coupe or an SUV. In fact, speaking of SUVs, the IONIQ 5 has a larger wheelbase than its gas-powered brother, the Hyundai Palisade.

Subtle matrix markings around the IONIQ 5 help to define it and stand out from the EV crowd. Part of this allure is because of the lighting seen around the vehicle, especially when charging at night. The front “grille” features a light bar that illuminates when the car is plugged in for charging.

A minimalist interior is also part of the plan.

Ensconced in comfort, IONIQ 5 passengers enjoy the vehicle’s handsome, two-toned style. Featuring a terra brown and mud gray interior, it is calming in its earthiness. The seats are surprisingly comfortable with good support for the long haul.

The dashboard features a clean spread across the driver’s information panel, which spans to the vehicle centerline with the center console. The look is good, but the controls might be a bit confusing. Some require double clicks like your computer mouse, while others react after a single hit. It takes a while to learn which side your IT (information technology) bread is buttered on.

Cargo area in back is about average for a standard passenger SUV. If you need more room, just flip the rear seats forward. If you need even more, there is a small storage container in the frunk. (The trunk in front.)

After the “swooshing up” sound occurring at startup, we are ready to move out. But where’s the gear selector? Oh, right here! It’s one of the new age self-returning  dials that you flip where you want it to go, and it flips back into position for the next command. It takes a minute or two but you’ll get used to it.

Once underway, you’ll hear, or won’t hear any noise coming from the car. Well, there will be a soft, subtle chiming that is designed more to let those outside the vehicle know it is there. Acceleration is stellar thanks to the dual electric motors powering the ‘5. Handling is stout, too, thanks to the well-tuned e-GMP chassis.

The best part about the IONIQ 5 is pulling up to a streetlight where a Mustang and Challenger are poised to launch. The light turns green, the pedals are mashed and once again, a little electric vehicle hands them their lunch. The acceleration is that potent. At that point, a little magic dust once again helps spread some Disney Magic!

I've loved everything on wheels: Trains, Planes and definitely Automobiles. I am constantly in search of the latest in new technology, which makes our lives better each day, but will always respect the classics. You can't continue forward without first taking a look back at where you've been.
