Newly sculpted, the 2022 Infiniti QX60 Sensory AWD returns with a goal of remaining as one of the brand’s bestselling SUVs. It features a new and improved vehicle based on the previously used platform. Although an inch shorter overall than before, it now stands an inch wider than designed. Napleton News had a test model for a week. Here’s what we thought of one of Infiniti’s latest models.
The brand’s ubiquitous 3.5-liter V6 engine powers the new Infiniti QX60. Producing 295 horsepower and 270 lb-ft of torque, it matches up to a 9-speed automatic transmission which is a significant improvement over the continuously variable transmission (CVT) that formerly occupied this transmission’s space. Others have said it and we noticed it, too; there’s a slight hesitancy on the part of the transmission when you decide to jab the accelerator. It steps up, mind you, just not as fast as you may hope it would. Regardless, the new gearbox works flawlessly once it sorts things out.
Thankfully, the drone of the Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) is gone.
There’s a bonus with the 9-speed gearbox: The QX60 can now tow up to 6,000 pounds rather than the 5,000 pounds it could handle with the CVT.
Squatty like an English Bulldog, the new Infiniti QX60 takes advantage of its wider stance and shorter length. It is essentially a gussied-up Nissan Pathfinder and it trumps its corporate cousin with a new, elegant look overall.
A new, more stylish grille starts the party and features a bold Infiniti imprint on the lower barrel edge. Gloss black mesh sets off the chrome bits, which flow up to a flattish hood that leads rearward to broad shoulders.
It’s a more mature look than some of the other same-sized vehicles in the segment.
The inside of the new Infiniti QX60 is a combination of the latest technology and luxury in one roomy cabin. There’s black open-pore ash wood interior trim, leather-appointed heated and ventilated front seating with massage and accommodations for six or seven passengers, depending on configuration.
The tech is top-shelf too. The QX60 is complete with a 12.3-inch digital high-resolution screen for the QX60’s gauges and meters. Customize the screen display with steering wheel-mounted control buttons, including the Infiniti PROPilot Assist to operate adaptive cruise control with steering assist, speed adjust by route and more.
The Infiniti In-Touch 12.3-inch display is the centerpiece of the cabin. It features controls for Navigation, Satellite Radio, Smartphone integration and other features. Although a touchscreen display, it can be controlled by a dial located on the center console.
A panoramic sunroof allows for a daily dose of Vitamin D. While that’s happening, you can stay entertained with the Bose 17-speaker premium audio system. We didn’t want to get out.
Starting the QX60 is a stretch for some and just fine for others. Closing the door and reaching for the starter button is a reach when you combine those steps with placing pressure on the brake pedal. Once the QX cranks over, the seat moves into the proper position and you are ready to go.
The toggle-style gear selector is easy to operate, following a couple of chances to gain its acquaintance. Once underway, this Crossover is a competent handler with plenty of acceleration once the transmission calms down. We appreciate the steering wheel-mounted paddle shift levers that enable quick downshifts. If we didn’t know any better, we think its faster than the actual 9-speed gearbox on its own.
The best part of the Infiniti is the serene quiet inside. The Infiniti QX60 lets you carry on with your inside voice despite what may be happening outside.
