McLaren Cars News & Reviews

McLaren Artura Spider Americas Debut

The week of April 30 to May 5 was a good one for McLaren Cars. First, it was the return of the McLaren Formula 1 team to the Miami International Autodrome at Hard Rock Stadium. Second, it was the scene of McLaren driver Lando Norris’s first win in Formula 1 racing. The week also celebrated the debut to the Americas Region of the new McLaren Artura Spider. There were celebrations everywhere, and Napleton News is always up for a party.

The Americas Region encompasses North and South America, Canada and more.

What’s the McLaren Artura Spider?

The McLaren Artura Spider is the latest supercar from the McLaren Automotive Company, based in Woking, UK, just a stone’s throw away from London. Claimed by the company to be next generation, it features an upgraded hybrid powertrain, with more dynamic performance, power and higher levels of driver connection than ever before. Based on the Artura Coupe, the new Artura Spider brings these improvements to deliver more supercar refinement to the range.

The covered McLaren Artura Spider is discussed by Nicolas Brown before the reveal.

Through the brand’s experience in racing, McLaren tries to instill a little bit of race car into every street car it makes. That includes cutting weight wherever possible. In the case of the Artura Spider, it tips the scale at 1457 kg or 3212 pounds.

Power is supplied by an advanced 3.0-liter V6 hybrid powerplant. Derived from the P1 Hypercar and the McLaren Speedtail, it delivers 690 horsepower and 531 lb-ft of torque in this situation. A plug-in hybrid vehicle, it includes an electric motor housed in the 8-speed automatic transmission. Battery power is supplied from a 7.4 kWh lithium-ion battery McLaren claims the Spider can achieve 21 miles on pure electric power. Others, including the EPA, say that number is less but as always, your mileage may vary. By the numbers, the Artura Spider achieves a 0-60 mph time of 3.0 seconds. Could they be sandbagging? Maybe…

The car is always the star at events such as these. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t other luminaries floating through the atmosphere at the Rubell Museum near downtown Miami. Also in attendance was McLaren Formula 1 Pilot Oscar Piastri, McLaren President of the Americas region, Nicolas Brown and Paul S. Walsh, executive chairman of the McLaren Group, along with his wife, Julie.

In addition, there was the brand new Artura Spider and a variety of other McLaren road cars. But the most exciting vehicle of all was the McLaren Formula 1 show car greeting the arrivals in the museum’s entrance.

It appeared to be on a tear as much as it would be several days later during the Miami Formula 1 race.
