The new Mercedes-Benz S580 4MATIC sedan is a prime example of Mercedes’ desire to bring “the Best or Nothing” to the marketplace. A large luxurious four-door sedan, it reminds buyers how to separate the wheat from the chaff in the case of luxury and so-called also-rans. It’s always a good week when Napleton News has time to hop behind the wheel of this near flagship vehicle. It also means we’ll sit on air-conditioned and massaging seats.
There’s nothing better when hitting the highway! Hop in with us as we go super cruising.
There’s just something about the S580 that other luxo-cruisers lack. Is it the classic Mercedes look? Or the coddling interior? Could it be the sublime professional grade audio system? Or all of the above? Regardless of which key ingredient it is that puts you over the edge, we think you’ll be rewarded with one of the most impressive vehicles on the road today.
Here are some highlights:
Power for the S580 comes from the proven 4.0-liter BiTurbo (twin turbocharged) V8 engine that is seen in everything from an AMG GT to an E63, a G-Wagon and more. This powerplant makes 496 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque and mates to 9G-Tronic 9-speed automatic. The engine has a 48-volt mild hybrid system and sends power to the pavement through its all-wheel drive system.
Other variations exist if you are not interested in all that power:
The base engine powering the S500 is a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6 cylinder + 48-volt mild hybrid system. It provides 429 horsepower and 348 lb-ft of torque. Finally, the Maybach S680 and Edition 100 receive power from the 6.0-liter twin-turbocharged V12 engine. It produces 612 horsepower and 665 lb-ft of torque.
Now into its seventh-generation, the new S Class has developed into a modern image of S Class models from the past. Through all the changes, it remains one of the most elegant vehicles on the road today.
Conservative Elegance is the buzzword today, especially with the S Class 4MATIC sedan. The S Class doesn’t follow the curvy, jelly-beanish EQS EV. Instead, it maintains classic Mercedes style. Here, the S Class maintains its three-box shape, to the continued delight of the “Star Faithful.”
The interior of the Mercedes-Benz S580 4MATIC is where the MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) system does its best work. Acting like Amazon’s Alexa, the personal assistant can change channels, warm up or cool down the interior, or find a gas station near you. Just call out “Hey Mercedes” to wake the system up. It now incorporates hand gesture controls to turn down volume or swipe a screen from left to right.
Seating is as opulent as sitting on a throne. Thanks to luxuriously covered seats that feature heating and cooling and, with the front row, massage functions. Order the Rear Seat Package, as our tester was equipped, and you will receive a front seat that moves forward for extended legroom. It also includes a foot- and legrest with massage functions in the right rear seat. Adding the Executive Rear Seat Package brings multi-contour seating at all positions.
We honestly don’t know which we prefer more: Driving the S580 or sitting in the back seat?
Starting the S580 makes you feel as though the engine is not even engaged. That’s how quiet this beast is. But once you step on the gas, you’ll hear a nice but subdued growl, thanks to the double pane glass throughout. Zero to 60 mph comes on in 4.5 seconds, which is very stout considering the overall weight of the vehicle. But no matter. There are plenty of ponies under the hood of this luxo-barge.
Thanks to the 48-volt hybrid system, the S580 sips petrol rather than outright gulp it. That’s a good thing considering how fast it would, combined with the cost of premium fuel these days. It’s nothing for this sled to cruise along at 80 miles per hour without even breaking a sweat.
Hitting the twisties is another fine function of this larger-than-life luxo-sedan. Turns are executed quickly, thanks to the 10-degree rear axle steering. It helps to shorten the radius of the turn. The multi-contour seats help keep you in place with bolsters that snug up to you depending on where you are going. Turn right and the bolsters press in from the left side. Turn left and the right bolsters do the same.
At the end of it all, you can say the Mercedes-Benz S580 4MATIC truly has your back.
