2025 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD TrailBoss

That’s Hoss to you.

It looks every bit the bully it is, the 2025 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD is whooping butt and taking names on streets, ranches and construction sites across America. It’s a very strong heavy-duty pickup truck that’s massive in appearance and capability. At Napleton News, we’re all about Massive things. So step up, climb inside and let’s be off!

Strong like Bull!

Buyers of the new Silverado 2500 HD can select from two engines for their motivation. Those of the gasoline persuasion can select the 6.6-liter V8 engine and 10-speed automatic transmission. It’s no lightweight, making 401 horsepower and 454 lb-ft of torque.

But that would be just like driving a standard Silverado 1500. Not really but maybe. In that case we opted for the Silverado 2500 HD with a Duramax 6.6-liter Turbo-Diesel engine with Allison 10-speed automatic transmission. Here, that’s good for 445 horsepower and 910 lb-ft of torque.

Our sampler included Chevrolet’s TrailBoss Package with blacked out grille bar, Chevrolet black bow tie, 20-inch wheels, red recovery hooks, a black skid plate and more. It also includes the Z71 Off-Road package that brings an off-road suspension system with twin tube shocks, hill descent control, skid plates and a 3.42 ratio rear axle.

When properly equipped, the diesel-powered 2500 HD can tow up to 22,070 pounds. It can also carry a payload of 3,759 pounds in the bed.

What does the Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD TrailBoss look like?

In a word, the Silverado 2500 HD is massive. A person standing nearly six feet tall will find their shoulders at the same level as the hood. Considering this truck will tow almost 11 tons of trailer, you’ll quickly think, “of course it’s big!”

That enormous size will have you rethinking where you should take it. Tight parking garages, or on street parking may be difficult because of the 2500 HD’s overall size.

In  front you’ll find a set of animated LED headlamps with LED daytime running lights. Our sampler included a crew cab with seating for five across the rear bench seat. We kid, of course, but if you were pressed into hauling your kid’s middle school basketball team, they would all probably fit in the second row.

Other features include “step side” bed step notches to reach into the bed without climbing inside. There are the corner step cutouts as well for the same purpose. Top that off with GM’s Multiflex Tailgate, which is a multifunctional tailgate that can serve as a step, a bench, a desk or even just as a tailgate. It’s one of the more innovative examples available on the market today.

Sized like a New York City Apartment.

Inside the Silverado 2500 HD, you’ll find an abundance of space in which to work or play. It’s almost as large as a NYC apartment.  The trouble is it’s not as up-to-date as the interiors in its competition. Inside, you’ll find a luxed-out leather-like interior with heating and ventilated front seats and heated outboard rear seats.

The infotainment display is a 13.5-inch touchscreen display. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are here, but so is Google Assistant. That could be a good or bad thing depending on your thoughts of the brand. Here, you can control home devices, getting directions on Google Maps, send text messages or even change vehicle settings all with Alexa style voice commands.

At the end of the day, though, the Silverado 2500 HD interior is good. But the Ram does it better.

Behind the wheel of the Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD.

We have had so many vehicles with automatic running boards that flick out as soon as a door is opened. Most of those vehicles are not high enough to really warrant them. Instead, you step over them and end up with dirty pant legs instead. With our 2500 HD, we really could have used them here! This truck rides tall and some people will need a ladder or step stool to get inside. I asked my wife to let me photograph her getting into the truck. After the look I received, I decided that it is better to sleep in our bed rather than the garage.

After firing it up, our first impressions make us say, “It really doesn’t sound like a Diesel.” Well, it does, but that soon passes. Once we were underway, we did notice the differences of driving a lifted truck versus one that is “normal” whatever that may be. There is a tendency to feel you are driving on your tip-toes because of the higher center of gravity. But in some ways, the dual tube shocks from the Z71 TrailBoss package gives a better ride quality than that found with a standard 2500 HD.

Acceleration is to the wall thanks to the tons of torque from this Duramax. It’s a surprise when you pull a stoplight holeshot, leaping ahead of all the other cars around you. Sure, they will eventually catch up but as they say in drag racing, “the race is won in the first hundred feet.”

The Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD may not be the perfect vehicle for most. But if it’s what you need, for work or play, you will find the right HD for you.
