The Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit Reserve 4xe is a great way to save on gas prices. It’s also a great way to get the full effect of what a Grand Cherokee can do, while being green. If we were speaking of lettuce, (well, we were-kinda) it may cost a bit like Romaine rather than Iceberg, but we at Napleton News think the folks at Stellantis might be onto something here. Read on to find out just what we mean.
Now in its fifth-generation, the new Grand Cherokee Summit Reserve 4xe is a luxury midsize vehicle that is surprisingly capable. It’s one of those vehicles that can go on and off-road equally well. The best part is that it is a Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV). With its hybrid electric power generator, great fuel economy is the reward.
Motivation comes from a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline 4-cylinder engine plus two electric motors and a lithium-ion battery pack. It’s larger than a standard hybrid, owing to its status as a plug-in hybrid that can run strictly on electric power. This combination delivers 375 horsepower at 5,250 rpm and 470 lb-ft of torque at 3,000 rpm. The powertrain combo matches up to an 8-speed automatic transmission with Quadra-Trac 4-wheel drive. There’s a Quadra-Lift Air Suspension, which allows you to vary the ride height according to your terrain.
It also includes Jeep’s Selec-Terrain System that allows drivers to adapt to sand, snow, gravel and other surface types. Add the electronic limited slip differential for an axle that can pull or push through nearly any surface. There’s adaptive cruise control with stop and go and active lane-management to help you stay to the straight and narrow.
This PHEV powertrain can move the Grand Cherokee 4xe up to 26 miles on electricity alone with a full charge. Other drive modes can save electric power depending on which drive mode you choose. These include Hybrid mode, Electric Mode and eSave modes.
Jeep buyers are pretty traditional when it comes to their Grand Cherokee vehicles. In that sense, the Grand Cherokee 4xe will not disappoint. It looks like your standard, run-of-the-mill G-C except that this one includes a two-tone exterior paint scheme. We’re talking black and white in this case but it’s a good look.
There is a sloped front grille that reminds us of the one found on the Grand Wagoneer model. The Grand Cherokee is available in six flavors:
They price out between $60,360 and $78,320.
Inside the Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit Reserve 4xe, we found one of the best sorted interiors in the business. Filled with diamond-tufted leather seating, wood veneer trim throughout and elegant accents, it is one of the most inviting that we’ve seen. The diamond seating reminds us of some we have seen in the Bentley Continental GT.
The highline touch continues to the center console, where a knurled knob is there for easy gear selection. Seats with ventilation and heating add comfort for the front row, especially during the unseasonably hot summers we have experienced lately. Massaging front seats help to rub out a few kinks after slaving over a computer making digital widgets all day.
The 4xe includes the famous Uconnect 5 NAV system with a 10.1-inch touchscreen display. A bass-heavy 19-speaker McIntosh high-performance audio system and 950-watt amplifier fills the cabin with various tones that can cut through whether it’s the late, great Tony Bennett or MGK (Machine Gun Kelly) playing.
If you enjoy the standard gas-burning Jeep Grand Cherokee, you’ll love the PHEV 4xe. Pure Jeep from bumper to bumper (albeit with a turbo four-cylinder engine), it is a fully capable ride that can go places and save fuel at the same time.
With that plug-in bonus comes 26 miles of pure electric motivation. That’s enough for many drivers who drive within 30 miles to and from home and work each day. Using such protocols may find you making extra bank and waving as you go by your local petrol emporium.
Once you use up that charged battery, you’ll run as a standard hybrid vehicle. The internal combustion engine operates as a battery-recharger, doing its part to charge the 17kWh battery. From here, the motor-generators do their part to move the vehicle.
The Summit Reserve’s off-road abilities show this vehicle truly has the chops to take you on and off the road. It just doesn’t make a lot of noise doing it. It climbs like a mountain goat. All 4xe’s batteries, torque converters motor generators and other components are protected by underbody skid plates. As an added bonus, the Trail-Rated Jeep Cherokee 4xe components can handle water fording in streams up to two feet deep.
There are three drive modes drivers can take advantage of:
The Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit Reserve 4xe features the best of both worlds. It’s an impressive vehicle that can across town, off-road, and off the grid, all in absolute comfort. But the best thing is this is a true Grand Cherokee with an EPA estimated mileage figure of 56 miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe). As we say, your mileage may vary.
