Hyundai and Kia Park Outside Recall

Companies Advise Owners to Park Outside

Hyundai Motor America and Kia America have both issued “Park Outside” recall for over 3.3 million vehicles that could be susceptible to the risk of fire. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced the recall on Sept. 27, 2023. It involves over 1.6 million Hyundai and 1.7 million Kia vehicles.

Napleton News recommends paying attention to all correspondence received from Kia and Hyundai. This information will let new car buyers know when to schedule their vehicles for service. If you bought a pre-owned Hyundai or Kia, we recommend calling your local Kia or Hyundai dealership for more information. This way, you can make an appointment for service at your convenience.

Hyundai’s Safety Recall number:  NHTSA ID: 23V-651000

Kia’s Safety Recall number:  NHTSA ID: 23V-652000

What caused the Park Outside Recall?

2014 Hyundai Azera and 2012 Hyundai Veracruz.

In their press release, NHTSA says the recall occurred because the affected vehicles’ anti-lock braking system module might leak brake fluid, causing an electrical short circuit. This short could increase the electrical current in the ABS system, which in-turn could increase the risk an engine compartment fire. The fire risk could occur either while driving or while parked. This is why it is a so-called Park Outside Recall

Hyundai will notify owners to bring vehicles to their nearest dealership for service. Kia is finalizing their remedy. Recall repairs will be free to consumers.

NHTSA states that to date, Hyundai does not know of any crashes, injuries or fatalities resulting from this defect. They add that there have been 21 related vehicle fires in the U.S. as well as 22 “Thermal” incidents including visible smoke, burning and melting.

NHTSA further states that Kia does not know of any crashes, injuries or fatalities associated with this defect. Kia is aware of a single engine compartment fires. They also know of three fires in the control unit and six instances of melting parts within the system.
