In their press release, NHTSA says the recall occurred because the affected vehicles’ anti-lock braking system module might leak brake fluid, causing an electrical short circuit. This is why it is a so-called Park Outside Recall
Hyundai will notify owners to bring vehicles to their nearest dealership for service. Kia is finalizing their remedy. Recall repairs will be free to consumers.
NHTSA states that to date, Hyundai does not know of any crashes, injuries or fatalities resulting from this defect. They add that there have been 21 related vehicle fires in the U.S. as well as 22 “Thermal” incidents including visible smoke, burning and melting.
