2021 Kia K5 GT
Nearly ten years after shaking up the mid-size market, the new 2021 Kia K5 prepares to do it again. The company introduced the new K5, replacing the Kia Optima during a press conference Tuesday. The new K5 utilizes the brand’s new N3 platform, which is longer, lower and wider. Along the way, it takes on a Stinger-like appearance, paying tribute to its bigger, more powerful brother.
The new Kia K5 gets its power from one of two turbocharged engines. First up is a 1.6-liter Gas Direct Injection (GDI) four-cylinder engine that makes 180 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque. This engine adopts Continuously Variable Valve Duration (CVVD), which causes a performance boost and improves fuel efficiency at the same time.
Secondly is the turbocharged 2.5-liter GDI and Multi-Port Injected four-cylinder engine producing 290 horsepower and 311 lb-ft of torque. It is mated to a new 8-speed wet Dual-clutch transmission that allows it to go from 0-60 in 5.8 seconds.
Available all-wheel-drive (AWD) allows all-weather-drive capabilities with active torque distribution between the front and rear wheels. Sensors read the road and, as a result of any wheel slippage, can send more torque to wheels that already have traction. The K5 AWD system is front wheel-based, and utilizes electro-hydraulic coupling for faster AWD for quicker response. AWD will be available in late 2020.
Bold from the start, the new Kia K5 reveals a new look at the Tiger Face grille. Made to make hearts beat, it features a shark skin-inspired mesh design on the front grille and at the rear dual chrome exhaust tips.
Innovative “heartbeat” daytime running lights and taillights mimic the appearance of heartbeats on a heart monitor. It’s the first time Napleton.news has seen such lighting utilized. At the rear, there are available LED dashes that span the width of the rear deck.
Technophiles don’t need to worry about being left out. From driver assists, including now-standard Forward Collision Avoidance, Rear Occupant Alert, and Lane Follow Assist, to a drive mode selector that allows drivers the ability to tailor their ride quality from Normal, Smart, Sport, Sport+ and Custom modes, it’s all here.
The new K5 is not finished yet. It is complete with custom interiors and an available 12-Speaker Bose premium audio system. Controlled by either an 8-inch or 10.25-inch touchscreen display, it also helps to operate a wireless fast charger, wireless Android Auto and wireless Apple CarPlay.
