A hot-rod electric vehicle like the new Mercedes-AMG EQE SUV may be all you need to make the scene at your local big box store, the kid’s afterschool sports program or even just an exuberant jaunt from work to home at the end of the day. We at Napleton News have always been sports car folks (emphasis on the car part) but are slowly, slooooooowly starting to warm to the concept of a hot SUV. So unplug this puppy, strap into the red seatbelts and let’s go for a ride.
The Mercedes-AMG EQE SUV is equipped, like all EQE SUVs 4Matic all-wheel drive modes with dual motors. That’s one per axle for those keeping score. The pair delivers 617 horsepower and 701 lb-ft of torque. But our tester is more special, still! Since it’s equipped with the AMG Dynamic Plus package, it can deliver 677-hp and 738 lb-ft respectively. On the other hand, setting into slippery mode for rainy, wet streets, cuts the power to around 300-hp. The comfort setting would dial it to 493-hp. In other words, Mercedes-AMG is doing their best to protect you from yourself.
Setting into Sport and Sport+ modes will stiffen the suspension and rear-wheel steering system will become more agile, but you do need to engage it to utilize it. It doesn’t magically appear on demand. An added bonus is the nine-degree rear axle steering system. Radical at times, it allows lane and direction changes almost without thinking about it. It’s the perfect foil for cutting a turn’s radius in half instantly.
The range of the AMG EQE SUV is approximately 255 miles per full charge. That’s give or take a few depending on how heavy your feet are. The AMG EQE is equipped with a 9.6 kW onboard AC charger and a 170 kW DC Fast Charger. These can help charge an additional 100 miles in around 15 minutes.
Using established test protocols, the AMG EQE SUV should achieve an EPA estimate of 77 MPGe city and 71 MGPe highway.
Sure, the Mercedes-AMG EQE is the hottest of the company’s SUVs, but just what does it look like?
There are many similarities between the EQE Sedan and the SUV. Start with the grille. Looking like they came from the same parts bin, the rounded, yet totally blocked fascia presents a dominating look that few vehicles have today. Still, after seeing the centrally mounted star, there is no mistaking this for any other brand.
A brief walk around the vehicle yields a curvy, sinuous body that flows from the front wings to the softly rounded shoulders at the rear. The better to slipstream, my dear. Simulated vents help toughen up the rear, which is reined in by a full-width LED taillight. It’s a well-executed look that is luxurious and sport significant at the same time.
It’s a technological tour d’force. But we’ve heard all that before. Still, getting inside the EQE is an experience that dazzles nearly all the senses including smell, sight, touch and more. Visually, the first thing you’ll notice is the large expanse of display screens from left to right. Known as the MBUX Hyperscreen, it offers an incredible view that stretches from side to side.
Directly in front, a driver will find an instrument cluster with various ways to configure it. These include classic, performance and digital displays. In the center is an infotainment touchscreen with controls for everything from Maps, Navigation, Google Maps, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Seating Kinetics, and more.
There is seating for five, with a good amount of rear seat legroom, to boot. Red accent stitching abounds, and is offset after dark by LED light pipes throughout. Mostly soothing with pinks, purples and greens, the lighting quickly turns red when it anticipates a short stop. The Burmester 3D Surround Sound System helps bring another type of soothing, unless you decide to tune into Metallica or Motörhead instead.
The first thing you notice is a sound effect that is straight from the Matrix series of movies. That’s courtesy of the AMG Sound Experience exterior and interior sound effects. Part safety equipment and part theater presentation, it causes the AMG EQE to emit a space age woosh-like sound that signals you have arrived in the cockpit. Once you are inside, sound follows you, but there’s also some noise going on outside too. This is to let pedestrians know that there is a virtually noiseless vehicle in their midst. Still, it’s a blast to turn it on or off.
Several drive modes were available including race mode that speeds things up considerably. The adjustable regenerative braking system allows for one pedal driving, via steering wheel-mounted paddles. Unfortunately, the system isn’t as seamless as those we have found from other brands.
Handling was aided by the rear wheel steering, which turned the wheels up to nine-degrees to help cut a corner in a much quicker fashion. That, combined with the adaptive ride control air suspension, helped offer a ride that while still firm, kept things comfortable overall.
Once underway, we were amazed at the speed we attained without even thinking about it. For those keeping score, the Mercedes-AMG EQE SUV tops out at 149 mph. That’s not shabby.
